U21s hoping for better luck at the Madejski after U18s lose to Reading

U18 Premier League

Reading 5 Arsenal 3 (Lipman 2, Dawkins)

Arsenal U18s continued their wretched run of form with a 5-3 defeat to Reading at the latter’s Hogwood Park training complex yesterday morning.

Austin Lipman scored twice for Steve Gatting’s side, with both goals resulting from penalties. The England youth international dispatched his first spot-kick with aplomb before later turning in the rebound after seeing his second penalty saved by the Reading goalkeeper.

Tarum Dawkins also found the net with his second goal of the season, but Arsenal still suffered a heavy defeat and are in danger of finishing bottom of their section. They play Blackburn Rovers next week in their final fixture of this phase.

Gatting made eight changes from the side that were thrashed by West Bromwich Albion last time out, with schoolboy Aaron Barnes making his debut at right-back.

Arsenal U21s, meanwhile, travel to the Madejski Stadium to face the Royals as they conclude their opening set of fixtures. In stark contrast to the U18s, Terry Burton’s outfit have already secured progression to the Elite Phase, but will still be seeking victory today having lost to West Brom in their previous fixture.

Thomas Eisfeld could return on the right flank, but his compatriot Serge Gnabry faces a fitness test. Kyle Ebecilio and Jordan Wynter miss out.

subs: Charles-Cook, Monteiro, Jeffrey, Ansah, Neita.

    1. do you think the team you have predicted to start will turn out again in the nextgen against athletic bilbao a couple of days later – in what is a must win to progress tie?
won’t some of the players be a little too “jaded” to do both games?

  1. Why don’t you list substitutions? It would be nice to know which substitutes came on, replacing whom and when. Thanks!
