Nico Yennaris trains with Arsenal U21s as Beijing Guoan midfielder continues recovery from injury

Former Arsenal academy player Nico Yennaris has been training with the club’s U21 squad at London Colney.

While many of the U21s are away with the first-team in Dubai, Yennaris has been taking part in training with those who have remained in England. He has been wearing number 66, which is vacant.

The 29-year-old currently plays for Beijing Guoan but has endured much misfortune with injury. He previously used the gym at London Colney as part of his recovery.

Yennaris joined Arsenal in 2001 at the age of seven and went on to sign scholarship terms in 2009.

He made four senior appearances for Arsenal, including one against Manchester United in the Premier League. Yennaris was a regular for Arsenal at youth level, featuring in midfield and at right-back, and he was part of the U18 team that won the league title in 2009/10.

After loan spells at Notts County and Bournemouth, Yennaris joined Brentford permanently in January 2014.

Yennaris, who has Chinese heritage, joined Beijing Guoan in January 2019. Known as Li Ke, he has been capped by China on six occasions.

He has had three surgeries following an ‘uncommon’ knee injury.

  1. Nico wasn’t the most naturally gifted player ARSENAL ever had but he was one of the hardest working and got further than those who were more technical than him.
He was a favourite of mine and I was chuffed when he finally his chance in the first team it was a shame he never got more.
His Dad was a great help around the training ground as well.
