Arsenal promote Joe Willock to first-team squad

Arsenal have promoted Joe Willock to the first-team squad, with the midfielder allocated the number 28 shirt.

Hale End product Willock has made 17 senior appearances for Arsenal, scoring three goals, and featured in the Europa League final defeat to Chelsea last season.

Willock is the first Arsenal youngster to be promoted to the first-team squad since Ainsley Maitland-Niles two years ago.

The 19-year-old produced some outstanding performances for the U23s last season under the guidance of Freddie Ljungberg, who is now part of the first-team coaching staff.

Tyreece John-Jules, who scored a brace for the U23s against Boreham Wood last weekend, also trained with the first-team today, along with Robbie Burton and Zech Medley, while Henrikh Mkhitaryan returned.

  1. Hi Jeorge, thanks for all your work.
When we got to the FAYC final vs Chelsea in 2018, I thought that Robbie Burton looked a really accomplished player, comfortable on the ball with a nice range of passing, but he seems to have stood still since, why do you think that is and do you think that there’s any chance of him continuing his development at Arsenal this season?

Matt Smith looks a very good player, very economical with everything he does with an eye for an assist/pass…
