U17 Euros – Balogun misses decisive penalty as England are knocked out

England U17s’ hopes of winning the European Championship are over after they lost 6-5 on penalties to the Netherlands today, with Arsenal’s Folarin Balogun missing the decisive spot-kick.

The game ended goalless in extra-time, with England deprived of the services of one of the stars of the tournament in Xavier Amaechi, who was missing through suspension.

Two Arsenal players still started, with full-backs Vontae Daley-Campbell and Bukayo Saka involved from the outset, while Tyreece John-Jules and Balogun entered the fray as substitutes.

John-Jules and Saka both scored their penalties but Balogun missed as the hosts crashed out.

No Arsenal player will win the tournament this year with Jordan McEneff’s Republic of Ireland having been eliminated in the quarter-finals.
