Decision time dawning on new Deacon deal

The Premier Academy League season has, from Arsenal’s perspective, reached its conclusion and, unless Chelsea somehow fail to ascertain two points from their two remaining fixtures, so has the Reserve League, so thoughts can begin to turn towards next campaign and what the 2011/12 season will hold for Arsenal’s vast selection of young talents.

Before then, however, some important decisions have to be made, not least regarding those players who will be out of contract in less than two months time. Much has been made of Oguzhan Ozyakup’s predicament, with the Dutch midfield player yet to provide any telltale signs as to whether he will sign a new deal, but another player who sees his contract expire at the end of June is Roarie Deacon who, unlike Ozyakup, does not have his future in his own hands as the club have yet to decide whether to extend his stay at London Colney.

For some, it may be a little surprising that the club have not offered him an extension already, with Deacon, who can operate effectively in any one of the three positions behind the main striker in Arsenal’s favoured 4-2-3-1 formation, having impressed in the recent Dallas Cup on the back of a campaign that saw him find the net four times at Reserve level in sixteen appearances. That may not be the most prolific return, but half of those appearances have come as a substitute and, tellingly, Deacon has also weighed in with several assists at key moments in matches.

Deacon certainly has cause to feel that the club have treated him unfairly since he graduated from Hale End. He was not awarded a professional contract until his the end of his second season as a scholar and even then was only given a one-year deal,  he was an un-used substitute in the Academy League Final at Emirates Stadium last season, and, more recently, found himself on the bench for the final Reserve game of the season due to the presence of Jeremie Aliadiere, a player who is not even contracted to the club.

It is true that he occasionally lacks a little decisiveness in the final third and, in the long run, will probably struggle to make the grade at Arsenal, but for his enthusiasm, evident love of the game, impressive technical ability and his dangerous crosses, he should be offered another season’s stay at least.

Two other players who see their contracts expire this summer are second-year scholars Jernade Meade and George Brislen-Hall. Brislen-Hall’s departure is already certain, with Academy Head Liam Brady having decided after four games of the current season not to offer him professional terms, whilst Meade, who recently returned from injury and has impressed for the Reserves and the under-18s, should receive a one year pro deal.

  1. Hopefully Oz and Deacon get new deals and go out on loan next season. What I have seen of Meade and Brislen-Hall both seem decent. Think you could a do a review of certain players from the reserve season? Thanks

  2. It seems harsh that Brislen-Hall situation was decided after 4 games of this season, what if he had a brilliant season.

Was it to do with reasons outside football? If not it seems a little harsh.

Have Arsenal started treating the young players badly, this is very un Arsenal like.

  3. Brislen-Hall was not decided after four games, it was decided at the end of the previous season. The first four games just confirmed that he lacks technical ability and positional sense.
That doe snot mean that he will never be a professional footballer, just not an Arsenal professional footballer.
Arsenal has to show more ruthlessness with young players. Yes Arsenal FC need to give time to young players, but on the other hand there is no need to waste time and money on lost causes because he is a local lad.

  4. We have like 50 or more youngsters(Reserves,U-18s and loans) on our books and there are a lot more coming up next season and the season after……. We need to get rid of plenty. We can not keep all of them.
Deacon looks like he can be at least a very good Championship player. Maybe we can give him a two-year contract and sell him for a good profit. We sold Jay Simpson for 2M so why not Deacon ?

  5. Ineffective Mark Randall stay up to his 22 birthday, and a very competent Roarie Beacon is release, this is ludicrous.

    1. That was because there were no youngsters coming close to him a couple of years. Then Wilshire came and then Aneke and Henderson. And today we have many in all position and very promising so.

  6. Arsenal need 2 be ruthless wit some youngsters who are not promising 1randall 2hyote 3watt 4eastmond 5sunu 6GBH 7deacon 8murphy

  7. If you look at the 63 professionals and 2nd years IMO there are 3 distinct groups at the moment. The should go’s, the could go’s and the rest.

The should go’s (Have basically done nothing to prove otherwise)
    Almunia Lehmann
    Eastmond Hoyte Squillaci Boateng Brislen-Hall
    Randall Denilson Diaby Rosicky Meade
    Bendtner Vela Murphy Sunu

The could go’s (out of contract/a year left/not quite cutting it/impatient)
    Fabianski Shea Mannone McDermott
    Eboue Bartley Clichy Cruise Traore
    Ozyakup Fabregas Nasri Deacon
    Chamakh Arshavin Watt

    The rest
    Szcesney Martinez
Sagna Djourou Vermaelen Koscielny Gibbs Hajrovic Angha Monteiro Botelho Miquel
Song Wilshere Ramsey Aneke Frimpong Coquelin Galindo Henderson Yennaris Edge Ebicilio Lansbury Emmanuel-Thomas
Van Persie Walcott Afobe Miyaichi Freeman Silva

Hopefully many of the could go’s will stay, i wont shed any tears for the players that should go. As for the rest its a pretty good base for a squad, however if any of the could go’s leave they must be replaced. of the should go’s only the true first team players need to be replaced Squillaci, Denilson, Diaby, Rosicky, Bendtner. I have not included Almunia and Lehmann as they are 4th and 5th choice keepers as far as i am concerned and should Fabianski and Mannone be prepared to fight it out with Chezzer then i think we have enough.

    1. so ur basically saying half of the reserve and first team could go in the summer….you really are an idiot lmao

      1. Don’t know what education you had but i said 16 players could go this summer out of 63. This is mainly due to contracts either entering the last year or already up. However some others like bartley eboue mannone and traore have already expressed they are unhappy to sit on the bench. I also think chamakh and mcdermott might be deemed not good enough. Shekio your a Twat for name calling. What is the point of people commenting if all others are going to do is slag them off. If you disagree with an opinion fair enough explain why you think different. But this is my opinion if i am wrong i will hold my hand up in august. But answer me this do you think we should keep nasri arshavin and clichy for another season then let them walk for nothing? No so could they leave?

  8. i really dont see why arsenal wouldnt extend deacons deal and jeorge he started last seasons academy league final

  9. Phv :

I thought Ramsey was the natural replacement of Fabregas.

He is i think as for Ozy he i a good player but i do not think he is quiet good enough for our first team XI, and he is at the age now where he needs regular first team football not being loaned out or becoming bench meat, because look what happened to Randell he spent to much time playing for the stiffs and it has affected his career

  10. Honestly we should take a page out of Real Madrid’s book and start selling youngster to other clubs with buyback clauses. It’s becoming too difficult to find enough minutes for all of the players and it’s obvious that their development will suffer quite a bit.

  11. i know we have a lot of players, but i like Deacon’s enthusiasm and skill. Fans on here say ‘we can’t keep everyone’ or ‘he isn’t good enough’ and fair comment. But for myself, i like him and his attitude, he seems a fighter, and who knows how well he may develop in just a year? I hope he’s given another contract, good luck to the lad.

  12. well ,we can be sure roarie deacon will never gonna make it at arsenal….so the question is should we give him another chance (one year contract) knowing he certainly will not be good enough for the first team when the contract will expire……or should we let him go cause we don’t need to breed a young man with false illusion………i take the second option. and you?
