Pedro Botelho- Where do we go from here?

Pedro Botelho has been an Arsenal player for nearly three years yet he still remains under the radar of many fans. Work permit problems have seen him loaned out to Salamanca and, subsequently, Celta Vigo in Spain, with his spell at the latter drawing to a close this summer. Having previously stated that that particular loan spell would be his last such stint away from the club, what does the future hold for the Brazilian?

A player not adverse to controversy, having fallen out dramatically with Salamanca’s coaching staff last season, Pedro’s loan spells have yielded somewhat mixed results. He has impressed on occasion with his bursting runs down the left flank and pinpoint crosses but has occasionally looked suspect defensively and his attitude has come under the microscope on more than one occasion.

That is certainly something that he will have to rectify if he is to be successful in North London, although at the present time it is difficult to see where he will fit in anyway. Primarily a left-back, he has little chance of getting regular action in that position as he would find himself behind Gael Clichy, Kieran Gibbs and Armand Traore. Perhaps his best opportunity would be as a left-winger if Arsene Wenger reverted to a 4-4-2 formation next season. Botelho could potentially provide cover for Andrey Arshavin and Tomas Rosicky on that flank.

In the event it will be interesting to see what happens with regard to Botelho this summer. Fran Merida’s departure could open a door for him, yet the new 25-man squad rule may harm him. If Botelho were not to get ample first-team opportunities at Arsenal then it would be a waste of time, money and talent. The club has worked arduously to improve his footballing education in the past few years, paying for an English tutor and consistently monitoring his performances in Spain.

What will happen to Pedro Botelho? Only time will tell.

  1. he’s a gone I thought that was obvious
he’s been too stupid in his loan spells and he will surely be heading somewhere else next season.
It will be interesting what happens with Norvedit
He has done OKAY in bundesliga and wenger will certainly think of introducing him into the first team next season
OUR CBS next year will hopefully be Laurent Koscielny, Vermaelen, Djourou, Sol and maybe Norvedit

  2. why dont we loan him to a championship club next season, so we can all keep an eye on him and he can slowly get the taste and experience of English football

    1. Benfica got him because they offered him 1st footie straight away while we offered loan to 2nd division with in Spain so when he comes back to us, he will be able to get work permitt at Home Office and have some experience.

  3. I don’t think they will get rid of him without giving him an oppurtunity. That said, LB is out of the question really with Clichy and Gibbs but he may be able to give us the width down the left in a 4-4-2 that would be a useful plan b. He reminds me of Gareth Bale a little from what i’ve seen of him and read.

Is he due back for pre-season with us, and having been away for 3 seasons has he been able to secure a work permit or dual nationality or will he have to go on loan again?

Laurent Koscielny won’t be joining Arsenal imo. The transfer was on the rumours section of the webpage which leads me to believe that there is no truth in it. It wouldn’t be paramount to the clubs chances of tying up the transfer to post it all over the webpage. The same therefore goes for Joe Hart, Yaya Toure, Mark Schwarzer, Gary Cahill and a couple of others.

I’d be more inclined to assume that the players we have been linked with that haven’t appeared, such as as Rob Green and Diakhate, are the ones on any potential short list.

  4. traore used to glide over the ground like roberto carlos or cicnho, he looked a very exciting prospect, but recently he has slowed down and become stiff and uninspiring…i don’t think he will make it. sounds like this pedro won’t make it either. if gibbs doesn’t do the business, i think the heir to clichy will be the boy cruise?

  5. i hate when people talk about these young players coming back to the club and immediately being involved in the first team picture. it’s not on. unless a player has had a season playing in the premier league, he should be nowhere near our first team. wilshere is close. no one else has proven themselves. simpson, pedro, lansbury, barazite – all of these youngsters, they need to prove what they can do in the premier league before anything else. in the meantime we need proven players. and we need to be deceisive about it. selling fabregas with a day to go until the window closes and then using some of the money to scrape up one or two young, unproven nobodies is not showing strength in the transfer market. all our talk about having money to spend will be shown as being bullshit if that’s what happens.

  6. if we have money like we say we do, we should stop squabbling over whether clubs want to let players go or not, we should stop squabbling over a couple million pounds in transfer fees and wages. pick some players, make good firm respectable offers and bully clubs into selling. no other clubs play nice in the transfer market, why should we? we are becoming a laughing stock.

  7. if fabregas actually goes, and i’m not convinced he will this summer, wenger must bring in arteta or gourcuff or van de vaart or a player of similar experience immediately. asking any of our current central midfielders to take over from fabregas is not good enough. ramsey and wilshere can do it, but not for another 3 years. neither diaby nor nasri are good enough. i will be so pissed off if wenger does not replace fabregas. it will be suicide. losing fabregas is not the same as losing an ageing vieira or henry. surely wenger sees that? if he doesn’t, i think he should not be given a contract extension.

  8. i worry that bringing in chamakh is a sign that we’re still broke. it means that we couldn’t afford to pay £5m for him in january. i think it’s highly likely that the money from the sales of adebayor and toure were not in fact given to wenger but were used to pay down the debts on the club. i wonder if we need to sell to buy this summer. if so, fabregas will be sold, maybe for £40m, and our outgoings will be managed so that we spend deceidedly less than that.

the club need to stop giving people the impression that they are flush with cash. it gets everyone’s hopes up, and adds to the disappointment when we sell good players.

  9. i want david dein back! he should buy lady nina’s shares and then come back and help toughen up our transfer business. i remember him flying into seville and concluding the reyes transfer in one afternoon, with a club who did not want to sell. the guy knows everyone in the game.

our current transfer approach gives us the look of a repeat rape victim wandering the streets of a bad neighborhood at night.

  10. If they have been named on arsenal.com, they’re not coming!

    I’m betting that we’ll get:

    Sorensen, Diakhate, J.Cole or Hazard.

  11. last year we lost adebayor and toure, a year before that did we not lose flamini and hleb? if fabregas goes, i hope no one else in the team loses faith and agitates for a move. if rvp gets sold, god help us…

  12. gunner17: I love your thoughts and critics toward the club. It shows that you are not a blinded fool that blatantly put his faith upon a “hot prospect” or Wenger. Keep up the good work (I gave you a thumb up for every comment that you made especially the one where you said: our current transfer approach gives us the look of a repeat rape victim wandering the streets of a bad neighborhood at night.)

Now, who do we got? Ivan Glazidis… Aight, I am not criticizing him, but can he really do business in the European world?

I have always been very conservative. I always tried to see what Wenger sees on certain players. Do the club have money? (Yes they will say in respond)

So, why are we still buying a 16 years old? Why are we salivating upon the fact that one of our loanees will probably make it next year to realize after that he was rubbish? Because the youth policies have kept us in this state of mind. I am not agaisnt it, but if we see the amount of success Barcelona have had in this era compared to us who have won nothing, it is quite shameful to see that our youth approach has been very deceiving.

We did not have financial support to begin with and lost a important businessman in David Dein. Then, to keep the faith high, they told the fans to keep their head up as they will be pleased in the UPCOMING years. So, we believed… Flamini got away, Hleb, Lassana Diara, Kolo Touré and the last, but not the least Adebayor. (I am excluding Henry). They continued to feed us with false hopes by saying that the likes of Denilson and Bendtner ARE GOING TO BE great players. Yeah, go and sell your best asset, then take your most average players and tell us that they will be the next prominent generation with probably 2 to 3 young unproven players coming from the youth academy?

Tsss… No wondering Arsenal have lost a lot of popularity. Now, Fabregas is on the verge of being sold to Barcelona. As gunner17 said, if Wenger really believes that one of the current member of the squad can replace FABREGAS, then Arsenal and Wenger have the same insane mind as Real Madrid except we don’t spend like crazy… We sell like crazy. Real spend 240 million euro one summer, it would not be surprising to learn that Arsenal have made that much amount of profit in one month with the sale of their players.

Great… Pedro Botelho… Who is he? If Clichy gets hurt who is gonna replace him? Not a 19 years old that slips at the sight of J.-S. Park?… Great… Great….

  13. Can you stay on topic and talk about Botelho ffs? If you want to discuss Wenger’s policy, there are other places for you.

  14. hopefully the club will announce a handful of deals on day one of the transfer window to shut people like me up. then maybe we can all have a relaxed summer and sit bcak and watch the world cup in peace.

  15. traore seemed good a good player and he use to be good at making overlapping runs, but it seems like he has lossed the confidence and flair. Maybe bothelo could be good as he obviously doesn’t lack confidence and an aggressive ability. the most important attribute for a player is composure and confidence and let just hope bothelo has that.

  16. @ gunner17

I hope your boss doesn’t see your comments here because that will automatically means you are kicked.

And I understand that you are having boring in your work but you don’t have to spam like crazy. I never read anyone of your comments because that was like read my comments please I am so desperate.

  17. gunner17 what about you stay on topic and go on Le grove moan or something.Have respect J.Bird who write an article about Bothello.you feel like writing about club policy ,transfer you are on the wrong blog.

I though Traore was leaving to PSG,so Bothello could maybe im the Carling cup team

  18. Who wants K Toure and Adebeyor? Their performances the last 2 years shows that they are past it and were carried by a great system and a great midfield respectively.

As to Hleb, I’m not saying he wasn’t good for us, but I don’t think we’re poorer without him. Same for Flamini.

What was so good about the Reyes transfer? If we kept him, we would have paid 17m by all reports! Ronaldo cost much less than that, as did Nasri, Arshavin and others, notwithstanding inflation in the transfer market.

The club doesn’t conduct transfers with the fans piece of mind forefront – if the deal takes weeks, it takes weeks – get a hobby if you find it frustrating.
