Arsenal U16s 2 Southampton U16s 2

Arsenal under-16s were held to a 2-2 draw by a courageous Southampton outfit at London Colney on Saturday. The Gunners were without star striker Benik Afobe and goalkeeper Charlie Mann who were both with the under-18s.

A small group of fans had gathered for the encounter and whilst many chose to watch the under-18s game instead, the ones who elected to see Gatting’s boys in action were not left disappointed by the quality of football.

Midfielder Alex Witham gave Arsenal the lead in the first-half but Southampton equalised before the much-hyped Zack Ansah put the Gunners 2-1 ahead before the break.

The Saints fought for every ball in the second period and ended up turning their possession into a goal. Arsenal’s Polish trialist ‘keeper was beaten for the second time in the game but he wasn’t to be disheartened and made a fantastic save late on to keep Arsenal in it.

There is no league table conducted at this level but the Gunners are now unbeaten in three matches and travel to face Ipswich on Saturday.
