Arsenal loanees season review part one – first-team players

As usual, Arsenal sent a host of players on loan this season, with those in question having varying degrees of success.

Here’s a look at how each first-team loanee performed.

First-team

Marquinhos wasn’t able to make a major impact during his spell at Nantes but he has become increasingly involved of late for Fluminense, with the Brazilian, who is normally a winger, now often being used at right-back.

His loan deal runs until January and if he continues to impress then a permanent move could follow. There have been reports that Fluminense could look to sign Marquinhos permanently as early as this summer.

Alex Runarsson made six league appearances on loan at Cardiff City before leaving Arsenal permanently in the Winter transfer window and securing a move to Copenhagen.

Kieran Tierney has again endured injury problems this season but the defender has often impressed for Real Sociedad when fit and has helped his temporary side qualify for the Europa League. A permanent departure seems likely for Tierney but his destination is unclear.

Albert Sambi Lokonga struggled with injury earlier in the season but he subsequently showed some encouraging signs on loan at Luton Town despite the Hatters being relegated. Lokonga could well have several suitors if he leaves permanently this summer.

Nuno Tavares played just eight Premier League games for Nottingham Forest, with his loan not going as expected. Arsenal could now look to sell Tavares.

Arthur Okonkwo made the biggest impact of the first-team loanees as the goalkeeper built upon his experience at Sturm Graz to help Wrexham earn promotion from League Two.

Okonkwo often excelled, keeping 14 clean sheets in the league, but it seems as if his Arsenal journey will now come to an end.
