Amario Cozier-Duberry’s expected departure emphasises the difficulty of making it at Arsenal

According to various reports, Amario Cozier-Duberry has informed Arsenal that he will be leaving the club when his contract expires at the end of this month.

Having already lost Reuell Walters, who was in a similar situation, Arsenal are also now set to see Cozier-Duberry depart.

The winger has been a mainstay for Arsenal’s U21 side over the past couple of seasons and has frequently excelled at that level.

In addition, Cozier-Duberry has been on the bench for the first-team on eight occasions.

For many academy players, though, making the step up from the youth setup to the first-team at Arsenal now seems like an almost impossible task.

Unless a player is a truly exceptional talent such as Ethan Nwaneri, there is little evidence to suggest that they will be given chances to break into the squad.

Reports suggest that Arsenal wanted to send Cozier-Duberry on loan this season but were unable to do so due to his contractual situation.

Cozier-Duberry may well be frustrated that he didn’t get an opportunity in cup games and that is something that will have to change next season if Arsenal are to keep hold of other academy products.

Training with the first-team on numerous occasions and getting on the bench doesn’t equate for actual opportunities and the chance to break into the squad.

It will be intriguing to see how Arsenal handle the development of the likes of Nwaneri and Myles Lewis-Skelly, two players who are extremely highly regarded by the club.

For most of the others, though, the opportunities just don’t appear to be there at present and they cannot be begrudged for opting to continue their development elsewhere.

  1. Good luck to him, I expect we will see him in the PL in the not too distant future.

Seems strange that these players leave us without any senior football, either at the club or on loan. Seems a total mismanagement. But the loans we do don’t seem that well considered anyway. We don’t seem to have good relationships in this matter, do other clubs not trust our academy (why would they, we don’t) or is it we just don’t have the contacts.

After getting rid of the likes of Malen and Bennacer to concentrate on local lads it seems as if we have given up on that now too.

At least we have some light in Nwaneri, Obi Martin and Dowman – if they stay…
