Arsenal U21s were knocked out of the Bristol Street Motors Trophy at the second round stage again as they lost 3-0 away to League One side Peterborough United.

Peterborough scored twice in the first half and added another goal shortly after the break, with Arsenal suffering further frustration as Khayon Edwards missed a penalty.

Myles Lewis-Skelly and Ethan Nwaneri were involved with the U21s for the first time since returning from the U17 World Cup, while Josh Robinson made his first appearance at this level this season after recovering from injury.

Reuell Walters was on the bench for the first-team away to Luton Town, while Amario Cozier-Duberry and Bradley Ibrahim were also missing for the U21s.

Former Arsenal academy goalkeeper Fynn Talley started for Peterborough.

Subs: Nichols (for Robinson, 65), Ferdinand (for Gower, 65), I. Oulad M’Hand (for Lewis-Skelly, 81), Rosiak (for Nwaneri, 81). Not used: Hillson, Kacurri, Kamara.

Peterborough took the lead in the 36th minute through Ryan De Havilland and added to it three minutes later as Jonson Clarke-Harris scored.

Malik Mothersille, previously a youth player at Chelsea, then inflicted further damage on Arsenal as he made it 3-0 just after half time.

Arsenal were given a chance to get back into the game when Lewis-Skelly won a penalty, but Edwards missed from the spot.

Mehmet Ali then turned to his bench, with Josh Nichols and Seb Ferdinand coming on. Ismail Oulad M’Hand and Michal Rosiak later entered the fray, the latter making his debut in this competition.

There have been some positive moments for Arsenal in this competition this season, not least the 5-0 thrashing of Exeter, but this was a disappointing night and the result means that there will only be league matches for the U21s to play in the second half of the season.
