Arsenal U23s goalkeeper Tom Smith has signed a new contract with the club.
Smith, a product of Arsenal’s Hale End academy, has made seven appearances for the club at U23 level having previously played nine times for the U18s.
After previously having loan spells at Salisbury and Dover Atheltic, Smith headed to another non-league side this season in Welling United but he played just two league games due to injury and the deal was cut short in January.
The 20-year-old has endured much misfortune with injuries in recent seasons but he remains highly rated by the club and he travelled with the first-team last summer on their pre-season trip to Scotland.
There is much competition amongst the young goalkeepers at Arsenal, with Arthur Okonkwo in the first-team squad, while Karl Hein started well on loan at Reading before getting injured. Hubert Graczyk and Ovie Ejeheri have featured for the U18s and James Hillson is still at the club.
It seems likely that Smith could be loaned out again next season, perhaps to a League Two club this time.
