Arsenal U18s were thrashed 5-0 away by their Crystal Palace counterparts today.

The young Gunners, who have been in inconsistent form of late, were without regular goalkeeper Remy Mitchell, with Alex Kovacevic stepping in to make his first appearance at this level this season. Schoolboy Alexei Rojas Fedorushchenko was on the bench.

Khayon Edwards was also unavailable, so Mauro Bandeira captained the side.

Following a goalless first half, Palace took the lead in the 56th minute as Victor Akinwale scored.

Shortly afterwards it was 2-0, with Fionn Mooney finding the net.

Ademola Ola-Adebomi hit a brace and then Mooney scored again to inflict further damage on Arsenal.

It was a chastening experience for Arsenal, who will look to respond at home to Reading next weekend.

  1. I see Richards scored on his debut for Leicester, but still only u18s. I would like to know why so many youngsters leave the academy even though they are being offered contracts. Richards only said a few months ago that arsenal is in his roots, all his family support the club, then signs his first pro contract and bang he is off. Edwards looks like he is going, Daley-Campbell, Oyegoke, Plange, Musah and many more.

It’s like there is an impatience? or perhaps it’s greedy agents?

It’s quite clear there is going to be a change at Arsenal and if I was a kid there I would want to be around. Arteta is clearing out the deadwood in his squad, Edu is clearing out the wasted and inflated salaries. Arteta is obviously going to work with a smaller squad and then use the very best academy players to fill the gaps. So why would you want to leave, unless of course you don’t have faith in your ability?
