James Sweet doing his utmost to earn a professional contract at Arsenal

Having missed the end of last season through injury, James Sweet was fully aware that he would have to hit the ground running this time around.

Sweet is one of a host of Arsenal youngsters who are into the final year of their scholarship contracts but the 18-year-old has made such a significant impact in the early stages of the campaign that it would now come as a major surprise if he wasn’t offered a professional deal.

Last season Sweet, who possesses an excellent passing range, showed some glimpses of his ability in central midfield before injury stopped him in his tracks.

Now, though, Sweet is thriving as a right wing-back, with coach Dan Micciche making full use of the youngster’s passing and crossing abilities.

Even on occasions when he doesn’t perform particularly well, Sweet is still capable of making an impact in terms of creating chances, but recently most of his performances have been of a high standard.

Sweet has now registered six assists in nine league games for the U18s this season, the most recent of which came against Reading last weekend.

This season Sweet has linked particularly well with clinical forward Khayon Edwards, and he will hope to break into the U23 squad in the near future.

Capped by both England and Wales at youth level, it appears that Sweet is leaning towards representing the latter on the international front.

As far as his Arsenal career is concerned, Sweet has been catching the eye of late and his considerable efforts may well be rewarded with an extended stay at the club.
