Report – Joel Ideho scores but Arsenal U18s are thrashed by Norwich City

U18 Premier League

Norwich City 4 (Springett 3, Dickson-Peters 14, 45 (pen.), Kamara 72) Arsenal 1 (Ideho 81)

Joel Ideho scored his first goal for the club today but it was only a consolation as Arsenal U18s were thrashed 4-1 away to Norwich City.

Hubert Graczyk, who recently signed professional terms, returned in goal, while Zach Awe was given a start in defence. Defender Daniel Oyegoke was, rather unusually, deployed as a left winger with Omari Hutchinson named on the bench. Up front first-year scholar Billy Vigar was provided with an opportunity to impress and Nathan Butler-Oyedeji missed out through injury. Catalin Cirjan, meanwhile, started in the number ten position having been an unused substitute for the U23s last night.

Arsenal got off to a disappointing start, with Tony Springett putting Norwich ahead after just three minutes.

Thomas Dickson-Peters added another for the Canaries in the 14th minute and then got his second of the game with a penalty just before half time.

Arsenal made a double change ahead of the second half, with Mazeed Ogungbo replacing Henry Jeffcott at left-back, while Khayon Edwards entered the fray in place of Oyegoke.

Norwich remained in control of proceedings, however, with Jon Rowe missing a penalty before Abu Kamara made it 4-0, although Arsenal did get a goal back through Ideho.

Hutchinson had replaced Vigar in the 61st minute but it was another frustrating result for the U18s, who have now gone four games without a victory, with three of those matches ending in defeat.

It was far from ideal preparation for next weekend’s FA Youth Cup fourth round tie away to Blackburn Rovers, who knocked Arsenal out of the competition last season, although the Gunners are likely to field a slightly stronger side for that game.

Arsenal: Graczyk; Norton-Cuffy, Awe, Foran, Jeffcott (Ogungbo, 46); Henry-Francis, Bandeira; Ideho, Cirjan, Oyegoke (Edwards, 46); Vigar (Hutchinson, 61). Subs: Mitchell, Sagoe.
