Report – Cottrell strikes but Arsenal U23s start season with defeat to 10-man Southampton

Premier League 2

Arsenal 1 (Cottrell 11) Southampton 2 (Sims 48, Chauke 64)

Arsenal U23s’ start to the new Premier League 2 season didn’t go to plan as they were beaten 2-1 at home by a Southampton side that played the majority of the second half with ten men following the dismissal of Kayne Ramsey.

There were several changes from the EFL Cup victory against Ipswich Town, with Matt Macey, Miguel Azeez and Catalin Cirjan replacing Tom Smith, Jordan McEneff and Salah-Eddine for this behind closed doors encounter at London Colney.

The young Gunners took the lead in the eleventh minute courtesy of Ben Cottrell, who seems set for a significant campaign.

However, Southampton levelled courtesy of Josh Sims just after half time prior to Ramsey being sent off for a second bookable offence.

Despite their numerical disadvantage, the visitors proceeded to take the lead, with Kgagelo Chauke sending his effort beyond the reach of Macey.

Substitute Salah-Eddine missed a chance to find the net for Arsenal, who will seek to respond when they face Brighton & Hove Albion away next Friday.

Arsenal: Macey; Alebiosu (Akinola 63), Oyegoke (McEneff 77), McGuinness, Bola; Azeez, Olayinka; Cirjan (Salah-Eddine 58), Cottrell, Lewis; Balogun. Subs not used: Hillson, Ogungbo.
