Pre-season is traditionally a time for youngsters to impress, and that was certainly the case in the United States tonight, with Bukayo Saka and James Olayinka amongst the scorers as a largely youthful Arsenal side beat Colorado Rapids 3-0.
Saka, undoubtedly one of Arsenal’s standout starlets, put the Gunners ahead in the 13th minute with his first senior goal after being teed up by the recently-promoted Eddie Nketiah.
Olayinka proceeded to make it 2-0 with a superb strike, with the midfielder producing an impressive display despite not often catching the eye at youth level.
Arsenal’s third goal was scored by Gabriel Martinelli, with the summer signing finding the net on his first appearance for the club after he was located by Dominic Thompson.
Left-back Thompson was another youngster who received valuable playing time, along with midfielder Robbie Burton, who was impressive, and defender Zech Medley.
Tyreece John-Jules was deployed in the number ten position and will have been disappointed not to have found the net, but was lively throughout his time on the field.
Joe Willock, who, like Nketiah, was recently promoted, was brought on, although Reiss Nelson was an unused substitute, perhaps with Thursday’s game against Bayern Munich in mind.
Emile Smith Rowe, meanwhile, wasn’t involved as he continues his recovery from injury.
