Arsenal youngster Matt Smith rewarded with first professional contract after impressive performances

Arsenal midfielder Matt Smith has signed his first professional contract with the club.

An excellent passer, Smith has been a mainstay for Arsenal at U18 level and has also broken into the U23 squad, playing six times for Freddie Ljungberg’s side.

Last season Smith, a product of Arsenal’s Hale End academy, trained with the first-team on several occasions and he also featured against Chelsea in the FA Youth Cup final.

Excluding goalkeeper James Hillson, who is on loan from Reading, the Gunners now have four remaining second year scholars – Vontae Daley-Campbell, Mark McGuinness, Bayli Spencer-Adams and Zak Swanson.
