Report – Balogun strikes but Arsenal U18s miss two penalties in defeat to Tottenham

U18 Premier League

Tottenham Hotspur 3 (Okedina 43, Clarke 54, White 68) Arsenal 2 (Balogun 3, Cirkin (o.g.) 77)

Matt Smith and Sam Greenwood both missed penalties as Arsenal U18s lost 3-2 away to rivals Tottenham Hotspur in an enthralling encounter today.

Arsenal named a strong side, with Ben Cottrell rewarded for his impressive recent form with a starting berth.

The young Gunners were annihilated in a 9-0 defeat in the corresponding fixture last season, albeit with a depleted team, but they got off to an impressive start on this occasion.

Prolific striker Folarin Balogun put the ball in the net after just three minutes following impressive work from Greenwood.

It looked as if Arsenal would carry that lead into the break but they suffered a blow just before half-time when Jubril Okedina scored.

Tottenham then went ahead in the second period through Rayan Clarke and Arsenal squandered an inviting opportunity to pull level when Smith’s penalty was saved.

Harvey White struck to seemingly secure the victory for Tottenham, but Arsenal were given hope when Dennis Cirkin inadvertently turned the ball into his own net.

Greenwood had the chance to equalise from the penalty spot in stoppage time but he missed, with Tottenham taking all three points and going above Arsenal to become league leaders in the process.

Arsenal: Hein; Daley-Campbell, McGuinness, Spencer-Adams, Lopez, M. Smith, Swanson; Cottrell (Flaherty 79), Greenwood, Musah (Dennis 75); Balogun.

Subs not used: Okonkwo, Matthews, Alebiosu.
