Arsenal defender Chiori Johnson on trial at Blackburn

Arsenal youngster Chiori Johnson is on trial with Blackburn Rovers.

The right-back hasn’t featured for Arsenal U23s all season but is now back to full fitness and is hoping to earn a contract with Blackburn.

Johnson, a graduate of Arsenal’s Hale End academy, signed scholarship terms in the summer of 2014 and turned professional shortly afterwards.

The 20-year-old previously trained with the Arsenal first-team squad but will now look to continue his career at Blackburn, the club against whom he made his second-string debut.

Johnson was in action for Blackburn U23s against Reading tonight.

  1. Has wenger ever brought a defender from the academy into the first team? I know he has got the academy managers to turn midfielders into centre backs and wingers into full backs, but when did the last kid who started out as a defender make it into the first-team squad and actually play as a defender?

I coach young kids and none of them want to be defenders and who can blame them? The Adams and keowns of this world are long gone and certainly would not have a chance under wenger. He couldn’t coach anyone to defend and I am certain he doesn’t want too.

I’m surprised he hasn’t tried 1 at the back

  2. All very well to keep knocking Arsene but how many defenders have any other top 6 managers brought through their academies, since John Terry?
