Loan report – Bramall stuck in U23s for Birmingham; Asano struggles

VfB Stuttgart v Karlsruher SC - Second Bundesliga

Takuma Asano started on the right wing and played the full game but was unable to make a major impact as Stuttgart beat Freiburg 3-0.

Kelechi Nwakali was brought on in the 46th minute as VVV-Venlo lost 3-0 to Heracles.

Stephy Mavididi came on in the 83rd minute as Preston North End lost 2-3 to Brentford.

Lucas Perez scored as Deportivo La Coruna lost 4-1 to Las Palmas in the Copa Del Rey on Thursday. The sides meet again in La Liga tomorrow night.

Emiliano Martinez was an unused substitute as Getafe beat Real Sociedad 2-1.

Cohen Bramall wasn’t involved and Carl Jenkinson missed out through injury as Birmingham City drew 0-0 with Aston Villa.

Bramall has played just twice for Birmingham’s first-team this season and recently featured for their U23 side against Barnsley.

Joel Campbell is expected to be involved when Real Betis face Espanyol away tomorrow night.

  1. Whether these players are in the shop window or learning their trade the loans facilitated by Arsenal this season simply aren’t working.

Jeorge, is it possible to recall Bramall from Birmingham, with the Europa Cup in mind, and do you think that Arsenal should make moves in this direction in January?

    1. Bramall can’t play in the Europa League unless he replaces someone on the senior list so it seems unlikely he will be recalled for that reason.

  2. Tbf none of these players would be getting anymore game time if they had stayed. May be Bramall might have got a few more minutes, but that would most likely have been at the expense of Nelson or Niles.

  3. Bramall was just a publicity stunt. Too old for Arsenal to try and develop, too raw for a team like Birmingham to use regularly. Similar story with Asano really – a pointless signing.
Nwakali and Mavididi are the only two I am interested in. Martinez is a career back up, Bola is a lower league player and the rest are seniors we just can’t get rid of.

    1. I am not sure that it was a publicity stunt. Cohen really show good quality going forward. However his defensive deficiency (lack of positional sense, bad timing of tackling, …) have been apparent in a back four situation. As a wingback he could be a decent deputy.
The problem is that there are very few teams in the English lower leagues that play with a back three and needed a left wing-back. Hopefully he is learning the art of defending at Birmingham. The Championship is a draining league, particularly around Christmas and New Year. He may get an opportunity during the festive season. If not recall and play in League and FA Cup games.
