Per Mertesacker to lead Arsenal Academy from 2018 with Luke Hobbs to remain in temporary charge

Per Mertesacker will become Arsenal’s academy manager in 2018, the club has confirmed.

Mertesacker will remain an Arsenal player for the upcoming season with Luke Hobbs to stay in charge of the academy for the time being.

Arsenal’s captain, Mertesacker has been at the club since 2011 and will become increasingly familiar with the academy set-up this campaign.

The Gunners had been on the lookout for a new academy manager since Andries Jonker’s departure last season.

  1. Is per giving up his no.4 shirt? So that wilshire can take it? Freeing up the 10 for lacazette?

I wonder if it means that Mertesacker might not be listed for epl duty and only used in the cups? It would make sense so as to give the likes of chambers, holding and Bielik more opportunities.

I also think it’s time for cazorla to admit defeat in his injury battle, he should start his coaching career too, if that is in his plans.

  2. Jeorge, any significance in his title being Academy Manager as opposed to Head of Youth Development held by his predecessors? (If that is the title he’s been given, that it)

    1. I don’t think there is a difference. Jonker had the title of Academy manager as well.
