Holding impresses and Akpom scores again as Arsenal beat Chivas

Arsenal continued their pre-season preparations with a 3-1 victory over Chivas De Guadalajara, with Rob Holding, Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain and Chuba Akpom on the scoresheet for the Gunners.

Oxlade-Chamberlain’s goal was the standout moment of the game, with the England international cutting back intelligently before finishing superbly.

Chivas managed to hold their own for the opening half an hour, but it was Arsenal who would break the deadlock courtesy of Holding’s first goal for the club, which came following good work from his central-defensive partner Calum Chambers.

Akpom, on as a second-half substitute, found the net from close range to score his ninth goal for the club in pre-season fixtures. The forward is still rather raw and is yet to prove himself at the highest level, but he appears a better option up front at present than Theo Walcott, who was again disappointing.

Several youngsters had run-outs in the second-half, including Krystian Bielik, who looks set to stay as a centre-back for the long-term judging by Arsene Wenger’s quotes.

Jeff Reine-Adelaide, Chris Willock and Gedion Zelalem also featured but the trio weren’t able to have much of an impact on proceedings, although the latter did play some neat passes.

Holding’s performance was hugely encouraging, with the former Bolton Wanderers centre-back reading the game well, bringing the ball out from the back and also providing a threat from set-pieces.

Meanwhile, David Ospina and Santi Cazorla made their first appearances of pre-season, with both players completing 45 minutes.

On a more negative note Mathieu Debuchy looked off the pace in the second period, with the right-back struggling to cope with the intensity of the game.

Arsenal have just two friendlies remaining- against Viking and Manchester City- before getting their Premier League campaign underway against Liverpool.

  1. if at 27 you aint playin up to the level you usually does at 17 instead of you to be far better then i dont think you should stil be at arsenal, does walcot knows what he really want on the pitch, he keeps saying he wants to be a central striker and whenever he does plays there or anywhere its as if he forgot his mission at home or couldn’t find the map and appears lost on d pitch, debuchy on the other hand keeps making harsh n rough challenges over and over again during d match costing us the penalty and almost got himself sent off, it makes someone wonder if arsene wenger is pleased to have these kind of players in the squad, he keeps talking of buying an upgrade every transfer if he sees one and not just buying for the sake of it which makes me wonder if there aint any upgrade on players like walcot and debuchy in the world or are they the best things we deserve

  2. There was 3 downers for me, chamberlain, holding and akpom. If they carry on like this in the next two matches, you can see wenger spilling out the old “I don’t want to halt anyone’s career” lines, in order not to spend I the transfer window.

Seriously, though the 3 of them are certainly showing the form that suggests they are all better options than someone else in the squad. I think had jenkinson been fit he too would be showing he is a better option than Debuchy.

I think Debuchy is set to be retained because of the lack of experience and the injuries to Mertesacker and Jenks. Have to say though his final delivery going forward is pretty good, but the best I have ever seen him ay for Arsenal was at centre back.

    1. In terms of goals Akpom looks good. But what about the rest? I mean he is not exactly doing something else extremely well. Against much better teams we can´t rely on this. There is a reason why he didn´t took a place in Hull. He did played in many games but was also substituted and not starting. The link up play and hold up play was really bad. The movement was nothing real special either.

I don´t think he is any more special than Mavididi, Malen or Hinds. He just got the opportunity now because he is a bit older and got a bit more experience.

I was also very impressed with Zelalem. I had my doubt about him but he is doing really well.
