Pre-season training got underway for the Arsenal first-team yesterday, and, as usual, there were several talented youngsters involved.
Some of the slightly older prospects were overlooked, however, with Isaac Hayden, Glen Kamara and Wellington not being called upon, while Jon Toral was also absent from the first-team training session.
The latter is reportedly set to depart on loan, but Hayden, Kamara and Wellington could be forgiven for feeling rather concerned regarding their long-term prospects of succeeding at Arsenal.
All three players spent time on loan last season without really standing out, and it appears that they face a battle to edge closer to the first-team squad, with time now starting to run out for the trio.
As far as Chris Willock is concerned, the young winger also wasn’t involved with the first-team yesterday, suggesting that he could be heading out on loan at some stage during this transfer window, something which may also be the case for Julio Pleguezuelo.
A group of youngsters did get to spend time with the first-team, however, with Matt Macey, Hugo Keto, Ben Sheaf, Donyell Malen, Stephy Mavididi, Reiss Nelson, Marcus McGuane and Krystian Bielik all being called upon. These players, at present, are the ones most likely to feature for the senior side in the upcoming pre-season fixtures, with their performances in training likely to dictate which ones make the cut.
Could it not be something as simple as they were doing gym work / had slight knocks?
Even if they were potentially leaving, it doesn’t really make sense for them not to be involved in training either with the seniors or the youth teams.
