Re-cap: Arsenal’s 10 new scholars for next season

Ten youngsters are set to commence their scholarship deals with Arsenal at the start of next month, with this year’s intake containing some talented players.

There is a possibility that further starlets could join this group, with the club likely to bring in some new signings, perhaps trialists from abroad.

Here’s an assessment of the players who are pencilled in to become scholars in July.

Joao Virginia- Goalkeeper

The Portugal youth international featured for Arsenal at U18 level in the closing stages of the season and demonstrated his ability to make spectacular stops, whilst he is also a fine distributor of the ball.

Reiss Nelson- Winger

Widely seen as one of Arsenal’s brightest prospects, Nelson has already established himself in the U21s and trained with the first-team. The skilful youngster impressed for England at the U17 European Championships.

Emile Smith-Rowe- Winger

Another winger with much potential, Smith-Rowe turned down offers from Barcelona and Tottenham Hotpsur to extend his stay with Arsenal. He has been a regular on the scoresheet for the U16s this season.

Josh Benson- Midfielder

A central-midfielder who is composed in possession, Benson possesses fleeting experience of U18 football and should establish himself at that level next season.

Joseph Olowu- Defender

The centre-back has progressed through the ranks at the Hale End academy and is an imposing presence. Olowu may have to be patient for opportunities in the U18s next season but he will be determined to seize his chance when it arrives.

Nathan Tormey- Winger

Tormey broke into the Arsenal U18 side this season and showcased his ability to beat players with ease. The prospect has been one of Arsenal’s best performers at U16 level this campaign.

Robbie Burton- Midfielder

A Welsh youth international, Burton often bursts forwards to good effect and is a neat passer of the ball. He has already played for the U18s.

Toby Omole- Defender

Another player with experience of U18 football, Omole hasn’t been entirely convincing at that level so far, but the centre-back should improve with further game time.

Dominic Thompson- Left-back

Arsenal could do with a left-back at U18 level and Thompson may well fill that void, with the youngster having performed consistently for the U16s.

Jay Beckford- Striker

Beckford is a hard-working forward who will provide Arsenal with an additional option in the final third at U18 level next season. He was previously at Leyton Orient.
