Portuguese youth international goalkeeper Joao Virginia made his first appearance for Arsenal U18s today as Frans De Kat’s side drew 3-3 with Aston Villa.

Arsenal’s starting line-up was primarily composed of second-year scholars, with several players being saved for the U21 game at home to Wolverhampton Wanderers on Monday.

Subs: Barden, Chatzitheodoridis, Mourgos, Tormey.

The game, the first encounter of the second tier, was hugely entertaining, with Arsenal leading 2-1 at the interval following goals from Nathan Tella and the increasingly impressive Edward Nketiah.

Villa fought arduously, however, and in the end Arsenal had to settle for a point, despite Kostas Pileas scoring his first goal for the club.

Arsenal aren’t in league action next weekend due to the FA Youth Cup tie with Liverpool taking place on Friday.
