Arsenal travel to face Sheffield Wednesday in the Capital One Cup next week and for two Arsenal youngsters the occasion could be a particularly momentous one.
Matt Macey and Alex Iwobi were both unused substitutes against Tottenham Hotspur in the previous round, but the pair could be set for more prominent involvement against the Championship side.
Macey was on the bench for the first-team against Watford and Bayern Munich, and, with David Ospina set to be out for several weeks due to a shoulder problem, the 21-year-old is in contention to make his first-team debut against Sheffield Wednesday.
Ospina would have been in line to start the fixture, but, with the Colombian ruled out, it remains to be seen whether manager Arsene Wenger will put his faith in Macey or deploy the significantly more experienced Petr Cech.
As far as Iwobi is concerned, the winger could finally make his competitive debut for the club, with his chances of doing so enhanced by the news that Aaron Ramsey is out with a hamstring injury.
Iwobi, who struck a brace for Arsenal’s U19 side against Bayern Munich U19s in the UEFA Youth League this week, shone for the first-team in pre-season and could feature at Hillsborough, either from the offset or as a substitute.
Several members of the first-team squad who aren’t currently in the starting line-up are likely to feature, with Mathieu Debuchy, Calum Chambers, Kieran Gibbs, Mikel Arteta, Mathieu Flamini and Joel Campbell all set to be called upon.
There may also be space in the squad for several other youngsters, with Ismael Bennacer, Glen Kamara and Julio Pleguezuelo all under consideration, although Krystian Bielik is doubtful because of injury and Jeff Reine-Adelaide is away at the U17 World Cup.
