Today the maiden batch of Arsenal’s senior squad members ventured onto the training pitches at London Colney for the first time this pre-season.

There were some familiar faces involved, including Per Mertesacker, Mathieu Debuchy, Gabriel, Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain, Jack Wilshere, Mathieu Flamini, Nacho Monreal, Yaya Sanogo, Francis Coquelin, Chuba Akpom and Hector Bellerin.

The latter two have been allocated new squad numbers for the 2015/16 campaign- 32 and 24 respectively, whilst Isaac Hayden and Gedion Zelalem, further young members of the senior squad, were also present.

Perhaps the most intriguing aspect of pre-season is that it allows us to gather an understanding as to which youngsters are closest to the senior squad. Today Dan Crowley, Alex Iwobi, Jon Toral, Wellington, Chris Willock all trained with the first-team squad along with recent recruit Jeff Reine-Adelaide, whose signing from Lens was confirmed yesterday. Those six players will be competing over the next few days for a place in the squad at the Premier League Asia Trophy, which gets underway next week.

Goalkeeper Emiliano Martinez is also back at London Colney and he and the rest of the players listed above will soon be joined by another batch of senior players, with Wojciech Szczesny, Kieran Gibbs, Laurent Koscielny, Tomas Rosicky, Mikel Arteta, Mesut Ozil, Olivier Giroud, Theo Walcott, Aaron Ramsey, Santi Cazorla, Danny Welbeck and Petr Cech all due to report to training soon.

  1. Hello jeorge, in accordance with the squad numbers, are those the right numbers or can we still expect some changes maybe in terms of new signings, players going out on season long loans or permanent sales. although the numbers are indications as to whom is closer to the first team and who still has some ways to go but not a guarantee on playing time, someone like zelalem though will be hoping for a lower squad number this season. i also noticed something in the pictures on the official arsenal website on the scholars and new young pros while signing their contract, some are wearing last season tops while others are wearing that of this season and there are number clashes on them(like 2 people wearing 94 n so on) also on joe willock you said on Twitter that he was sent home from the Netherlands, what was the reason was, is it due to illness/injury or is it an off field related issue

  2. Jb – akpom wore 31 in training today, u sure that’s not his new number? Crowley 43, Wellington 46 were other numbers.

  3. how does wellington look? Hayden is another interesting prospect too who can play in the DM position. he’s still at the club…

      1. tnx Tom, am aware that AS17 bn given 3 wks before he resumes to training. But haven’t heard a thing abt David. Its now clear
