Weakened Arsenal U18s lose to Southampton

Arsenal’s winless league run at U18 level stretched to ten games today as Frans De Kat’s side were beaten 1-0 away to Southampton.

De Kat changed his entire starting eleven from the side that beat Royston Town in the FA Youth Cup, with Elliot Wright returning from injury, Ben Sheaf captaining the team and schoolboys Marcus Tabi and Josh Da Silva both being afforded starts.

Southampton started brightly, with Callum Slattery coming close to scoring, but Arsenal created their first meaningful chance when Harry Donovan, deployed in a more advanced position than last week, shot wide following good work from Tabi on the left flank.

Arsenal had an opportunity to take the lead just before the interval when Southampton goalkeeper Jake Hallett could only clear as far as Savvas Mourgos. Mourgos flicked the ball into the path of Aaron Eyoma, but the winger could only find the side-netting when well placed.

It was Southampton, though, who would take the lead in the second-half after substitute Dan Demkiv crossed for Carel Kayembe to score.

Da Silva shot just wide as Arsenal threatened to respond but a Southampton side containing three former Arsenal youngsters (Chris Regis, Olufela Olomola and Harley Willard) eventually prevailed.

With the U18s struggling in the league, attention will now turn to Thursday’s UEFA Youth League trip to face Atletico Madrid.
