Arsenal youngster Alex Iwobi has enjoyed an eventful season so far having been named on the bench for the first-team, featured regularly for the U21s and captained the UEFA Youth League side, and there was further good news for the Hale End product today when he received a call up from the Nigerian Football Association for a get together in preparation for next year’s Olympic Games in Rio.
Iwobi is eligible for Nigeria through his parentage and is likely to accept the call up. The winger has previously represented England at U16, U17 and U18 levels, but hasn’t featured for the Three Lions since October 2013.
Recently Iwobi’s Arsenal U21 team-mate Semi Ajayi was called up to the Nigeria senior team but was unable to attend because of his club commitments, whilst Chuba Akpom remains eligible to represent the “Super Eagles” despite having featured heavily for England at youth level.
Ainsley Maitland-Niles’ conversion into a central-midfielder has enabled Iwobi to establish himself as the first-choice right-winger for the Arsenal U21s side this season and he has been playing with confidence of late, scoring away to Stoke City and Wolverhampton Wanderers.
