Akpom, Ajayi and Koscielny train ahead of Dortmund game

Chuba Akpom and Semi Ajayi trained with the Arsenal first-team this morning ahead of tomorrow’s Champions League game against Borussia Dortmund.

Akpom is part of the senior set-up but doesn’t always train with Arsene Wenger’s side. There has been tentative speculation this week that the striker is hesitating over whether to sign an extension to his contract with the club.

Laurent Koscielny, who has struggled with an Achilles problem, came through the training session unscathed but it isn’t clear if he will be involved tomorrow.

Danny Welbeck, Jack Wilshere and Wojciech Szczesny were all absent from the session because of injury. Wilshere’s absence could see Santi Cazorla return to the starting line-up, whilst Emiliano Martinez is set to make his second Champions League start in goal, with 17-year-old Ryan Huddart providing back-up on the bench.

Mesut Ozil, Mathieu Debuchy, David Ospina and Isaac Hayden are still out. Abou Diaby isn’t under consideration to play, whilst Olivier Giroud isn’t registered to feature in the Champions League.

  1. What of Walcott?

If welbeck doesn’t make it I wouldn’t mind seeing a front 3 of podolski sanchez Walcott with hopefully campbell back in the squad, but if Walcott is out then chamberlain in again.

  2. akpom leaving would be unbelievable. Easily best striking prospect through ranks since Kevin Campbell (in early 90s!!), has performed well through every youth stage- not only is there a high chance of us being left looking like mugs if he establishes himself as a high-level striker, and there’s a good chance of that, it’d cast a pall over all our youth development.

What’s the point of it if the best prospects go before getting a shot?

Maybe, if it were to happen, it would be a case of him being a little rash and impatient, but fact is you have to use your brains as a club where a highly talented player is concerned. Witness what West Ham are doing with Reece Oxford. Captain of u21s at 15, if he signs the contract he probably won’t be captain again for another two or three years. That’s how it works, surely- when a contracts up for renewal, and a player is itching to play, you gotta find some space for them to play and prove to them how valued they are. Might irritate you a bit, but it’s what you do.

I think it’ll happen myself. City are desperate for players to boost their home-grown quota, will make big promises, and won’t think twice about paying stupid money, so that’s my bet.
