Arsenal have announced that George Dobson has signed his first professional contract with the club.
In doing so, Dobson becomes the first member of this season’s intake of scholars to turn professional.
Dobson’s deal is certainly deserved given his impressive performances for the club at U18 level over the past few seasons. The 17 year old, who is capable of playing either as a centre-back or as a defensive-midfielder, established himself as a regular for the U18s when he was still a schoolboy.
This season, despite enduring some problems with injury, Dobson has continued to be a key figure at U18 level, whilst he has also stepped up to feature in the UEFA Youth League. He made his debut for the U21s against Newcastle United earlier this season.
A player with good leadership qualities, Dobson is capable of making well-timed challenges, whilst his passing is also of high quality.
Dobson’s future is secure, but who will follow him in signing a professional contract with the club? Tyrell Robinson, Aaron Eyoma, Ilias Chatzitheodoridis and Chiori Johnson are all now 17, but haven’t yet been approached by Arsenal regarding new contracts.
Chris Willock and Kaylen Hinds, two of the club’s most promising players in this age group, will be eligible for professional contracts in January.
