Vickers hoping his season can take off with Concord Rangers

Young Arsenal goalkeeper Josh Vickers has joined Conference South team Concord Rangers on an initial one-month loan.

Vickers enjoyed an impressive loan spell at Concord’s neighbours Canvey Island last season. The 18 year old is eligible for Concord’s FA Cup First Round fixture away to League Two side Mansfield Town tomorrow afternoon.

Vickers is in desperate need of regular game time having barely featured for Arsenal’s youth teams this season. No longer eligible for the UEFA Youth League, he has had to be content with three appearances for the U18s as an overage player, with Matt Macey installed as the regular goalkeeper for the U21s.

Vickers may also have been somewhat aggrieved that he was overlooked for inclusion in the squad for Arsenal’s recent Champions League tie away to Anderlecht, when Ryan Huddart, who is over a year younger than him, was named on the bench instead.

A product of Arsenal’s Hale End system, Vickers has demonstrated his undoubted qualities for Arsenal’s youth sides in the past, particularly impressing in the run to the Semi-Finals of the FA Youth Cup last season. He will benefit from regular match practice, but will be wary that it will be extremely difficult for him to make the first-team squad at Arsenal with the likes of Macey and Huddart ahead of him.

  1. if vickers is below macey & Huddart in the pecking order then there is a serious problem at Arsenal, he is by far the best youth keeper we have, he’s reflexes decision making, speed and also distribution is so far above everyone else’s level and he’s proven that time and time again wether for arsenal or on loan last season. Wish him well on he’s month away getting some games

    1. Have to agree with reman. I also think vickers is the next best keeper, after martinez although huddart runs him very close.

These youth loans are a great idea and we should do more of them, especially for the keepers. I am not sure of the criteria though, but personally I would say that iliev should be sent out on a youth loan if possible. Also with only 2 u21 matches left to play in 2014, I think we should be trying to place as many of the u21s as possible out on loan
If they are ineligible for u18, FAYC, or YCL and are not close to the first then best they get some action elsewhere.
