Young Arsenal goalkeeper Josh Vickers has joined Conference South team Concord Rangers on an initial one-month loan.
Vickers enjoyed an impressive loan spell at Concord’s neighbours Canvey Island last season. The 18 year old is eligible for Concord’s FA Cup First Round fixture away to League Two side Mansfield Town tomorrow afternoon.
Vickers is in desperate need of regular game time having barely featured for Arsenal’s youth teams this season. No longer eligible for the UEFA Youth League, he has had to be content with three appearances for the U18s as an overage player, with Matt Macey installed as the regular goalkeeper for the U21s.
Vickers may also have been somewhat aggrieved that he was overlooked for inclusion in the squad for Arsenal’s recent Champions League tie away to Anderlecht, when Ryan Huddart, who is over a year younger than him, was named on the bench instead.
A product of Arsenal’s Hale End system, Vickers has demonstrated his undoubted qualities for Arsenal’s youth sides in the past, particularly impressing in the run to the Semi-Finals of the FA Youth Cup last season. He will benefit from regular match practice, but will be wary that it will be extremely difficult for him to make the first-team squad at Arsenal with the likes of Macey and Huddart ahead of him.
