Four young defenders join first-team training ahead of Galatasaray game

Arsenal’s lack of defensive options are such that manager Arsene Wenger was forced to call upon four young defenders for today’s training session.

Hector Bellerin and Isaac Hayden have frequently trained with Wenger’s squad in recent weeks, whilst centre-back Stefan O’Connor and left-back Brandon Ormonde-Ottewill joined them for the final preparations ahead of tomorrow’s UEFA Champions League group stage game against Galatasaray.

Jack Wilshere also took part in training, but the midfielder could be rested against the Turkish side having suffered an injury scare against Tottenham Hotspur at the weekend.

Aaron Ramsey, Mikel Arteta, Nacho Monreal, Yaya Sanogo, Mathieu Debuchy and Olivier Giroud are all out.

Abou Diaby is not yet fit enough to play regularly but he came through today’s session unscathed, whilst Theo Walcott and Serge Gnabry are back in light training, with the wingers set to return to action next month after long lay-offs.

Players in training today: Szczesny, Ospina, Martinez, Chambers, Mertesacker, Koscielny, Gibbs, Rosicky, Podolski, Wilshere, Ozil, Oxlade-Chamberlain, Sanchez, Cazorla, Flamini, Welbeck, Campbell, Coquelin, Bellerin, Hayden, Ormonde-Ottewill, O’Connor, Diaby.

Arsenal U19s face Galatasaray’s youth team tomorrow in the next instalment of their UEFA Youth League campaign. The game kicks off at 2pm.

  1. I think, since arlon ramsey is out, let me hope arsene wenger will give Campbell a chance to start off the match.

  2. It’s gud for de club to have some hopes in dem,ie some of de juniour players.Let us dat dey will do deir best to proove dat can be fit and join de seniour team!

  3. I would quite like to see chambers play DM and bellerin play RB in this match. I was not impressed at all by flamini in the spurs match. Flamini lacks so much pace and chambers is probably the better tackler as well.

    1. If jack is not 100% I just hope we don’t risk him.

I would actually prefer coquelin over flamini, the Flamster appears to have lost something, a bit like arteta, rosicky, podolski and in some respect mertesacker. I think that thing is pace, it happens to us all as we get older. Some lose it in their twenties, some in their 30s, but one thing for sure is our team can never afford to play all 5 at once, that would be suicidal.

I really think wenger must consider replacing 1 or 2 of the 5 between now and the end of the January window. Whilst the summer could see another 1 or 2 of the 5 depart as well. If had to choose 1 to keep it would be mertesacker, but my own preference would be to sell the 4 midfielders whilst there is still a value. Then I would buy a Cb a Dm or 2 and a Lw.
