Mavididi strikes but Arsenal U18s suffer defeat to Aston Villa

U18 Premier League- Game 3

Arsenal 2 (Mavididi 17, Robinson 84) Aston Villa 3

Arsenal U18s suffered their first defeat under new manager Frans De Kat as they lost 3-2 to Aston Villa at London Colney this afternoon.

De Kat was deprived of the services of Chris Willock and Kaylen Hinds, who featured for England U17s in midweek, and watched his side fall behind to early goals from Andre Green and Rushian Hepburn Murphy.

Stephy Mavididi pulled a goal back before the break, but Hepburn Murphy struck again in the second-half to secure the win for Villa. Robinson scored with the aid of a deflection late on, but Arsenal were ultimately left disappointed.

Julio Pleguezuelo was deployed in midfield as he played 45 minutes on his return from injury, whilst Ainsley Maitland-Niles also featured having been amongst the substitutes for the U21s on Thursday. Robinson and Harry Donovan made the starting line-up, with schoolboy goalkeeper Brad House being named on the bench after earning his first call-up at this level.

  1. You sure about that holding midfield JB? Surely smith and maitland-niles swap.places at least? Also I would have thought dobson would be in the middle and pleguezuelo in the back 4? If not at least it explains the result.

JB – as it stands which 2 do you think are being left out of the champions league squad? My and zelalem, but I still think miquel, ryo and campbell could be moved on.

    1. I got the information from someone who went to the game, and they said that was how they lined up. I think Giroud might be left out and probably Ryo as well.

      1. Ok I wouldn’t question your personal vision but you see where I am coming from?

Hope it wasn’t u who gave a thumbs down?

Feyernood in for akpom, what do you think of that? I don’t rate the Dutch league, for me it’s the top 6 countries or the football league.

  2. Mavididi seems a cracking prospect, little surprised he’s not involved with Eng youth.

Glad to see Maitland-Niles played. My hope is that they’ll use the players like him quite a bit if they’re not with u21s. Bit surprised Moore didn’t get a game.

Shame to see the winning run end, but considering 3 lads were away with internationals, plus a number don’t have clearance yet, as well as the fact it was a close defeat, I’ll keep believing/hoping this could be an exceptional group.

Any thoughts on an Akpom loan ,Jeorge?

On the one hand it surely offers the best chance of speeding up his progress; on the other you lose control and it also raises the prospect of u21s being short of strikers again this year, leading to more fast-tracking of u18s and perhaps to both age groups ending up with mixed results or worse again.
