Arsenal U16s exit Ferroli Cup after defeat to Real Madrid

Arsenal U16s were knocked out of the Ferroli Cup after losing 3-2 to Real Madrid in the Semi-Finals this evening. Kaylen Hinds, who has already made an impact for Arsenal at U18 level, was amongst the scorers, but Madrid prevailed and will face AC Milan in the Final.

The young Gunners negotiated their way through the group stage after drawing with Padova and Juventus before beating Atalanta 4-1 courtesy of a brace from Stephy Mavididi and strikes from Hinds and Joe Willock.

Arsenal will now play Inter Milan in the 3rd place play-off. They included three trialists in their squad for the tournament in goalkeeper Kelland Absalom, left-back Kostas Pileas and midfielder Mourgos Savas.

Absalom, who is out of contract at Cardiff City, is a Wales U16 international, whilst Pileas has been capped by Cyprus at the same age group. Savas is based in Greece, with the club set to make a decision on whether to sign the trio in the coming weeks.

Chris Willock, whose future at the club is still a subject of some debate, travelled with the squad to Italy but was not fit to participate in any of the games. He should, however, be able to figure against West Ham United in the U16 friendly at Emirates Stadium next week.

Arsenal Ferroli Cup squad: Absalom, Centeno, Tella, Donovan, T. Bola, Parker, Musendo, Mourgos, Mavididi, Hinds, Da Silva, Gilmour, Phillips, Tabi, O. Moore, Pileas, J. Willock, C. Willock.

  1. Kostas Pileas and Mourgos Savas are part of the Arsenal Academy in Greece, which was set up 3 years ago and ex gunner Matthew Rose is one of the main men at the Academy

  2. Ah, the year of semi finals this one is. Sounds like they’ve done pretty well against some elite opposition.

    Mavididi and Dobson are the two schoolboys who’ve stood out on highlights so I’m well pleased to see the former excel over there. Any ideas why Dobson didn’t play?

    Anyway, so long as no more turn down contracts than the three who already have, things look pretty good for next year

    All we need now is to sign the standout from Victory Shield, Tyler Roberts (unfortunately, have only heard of Liverpool pursuing him)- first kid in that tournament who’s stood out to me as someone who looks very likely to be an absolute star.

    1. Yeah Joe is the youngest of the 3 brothers, if I am not mistaken he is only 13/14 years old. Just hope they don’t both leave and join elder brother matt at united.

      JB – who was the coach matt fell out with? And why did the younger 2 return after also leaving for chelsea?

  3. I think it was mentioned/implied on Jeorge Bird a long time ago that the Matt Willock / the Willock family fell out with Carl Laraman whilst he was at Hale End.
    If that was the case, that’s why there might be some reluctance for Chris Willock to sign as an Arsenal Scholar, as he would have to be coached by Laraman at U18/U21 level.

  4. JB – On a scale of 0-5 who of the remaining 1st & 2nd year scholars, yet to sign pro, are likely to be here next season?
    0 = no chance
    1 = highly unlikely
    2 = unlikely
    3 = unsure
    4 = likely
    5 = highly likely

    Tarum Dawkins
    Alfred Mugabo
    Glen Kamara
    Josh Vickers
    Arinse Uade
    Alex Iwobi
    Ainsley Maitland-Niles
    Tafari Moore
    Renny Smith
    Stefan O’Connor
    Elliot Wright
    Daniel Crowley

    I personally think only uade and mugabo could be leaving, though dawkins has also stagnated. of the younger ones, smith and wright have the most to do.

    of the 25 young pros born 1992 or after, currently not in the first team who do you think might leave?

    Samuel Galindo
    Damian Martinez
    Daniel Boateng
    Ignasi Miquel
    Wellington Silva
    Thomas Eisfeld
    Benik Afobe
    Chukwuemeka Aneke
    Semi Ajayi
    Zak Ansah

    Isaac Hayden
    Kristoffer Olsson
    Serge Gnabry
    Jack Jebb
    Austin Lipman
    Chuba Akpom
    Leander Siemann
    Brandon Ormonde-Ottewill
    Julio Pleguezuelo
    Ryan Huddart

    1. I think all of the first years will stay. Iwobi and Kamara will both definitely get professional contracts and Vickers should do as well. I would say Mugabo has about a 2/5 chance of getting one and Uade 3/5.

      I think Boateng, Fagan and maybe Siemann will leave. Afobe could also leave if we get a good offer.

      Ansah could also depart and final decisions will have to be made on Miquel and Aneke. On Thursday, 1 May 2014, Jeorge Bird's Arsenal Youth wrote:
