Loan report- Miquel makes rare Leicester start; Vickers concludes Canvey Island spell

Ignasi Miquel was handed a rare start for Leicester City in their 2-0 victory over Huddersfield Town. The Spanish centre-back was impressive as his temporary side kept a clean sheet.

Josh Vickers made some impressive saves but couldn’t prevent Canvey Island from losing 2-0 to Wealdstone in his final appearance for the Isthmian League side. Vickers has played 40 times this season whilst out on loan and has also turned in some superb performances for Arsenal at youth level.

Benik Afobe was introduced for the final five minutes as Sheffield Wednesday lost 3-1 to his former loan side Bolton Wanderers. The striker set up a chance for Caolan Lavery. Damian Martinez watched from the bench.

Wellington played 88 minutes as Murcia drew 1-1 with Alcorcon.

Daniel Boateng was an un-used substitute as Hibernian lost 2-1 to Hearts.

Injury again ruled Ju-Young Park out of Watford’s 4-2 defeat to Derby County. Chuks Aneke missed out through suspension as Crewe Alexandra drew 0-0 with Bristol City. Johan Djourou played no part as Hamburg lost 3-1 to Augsburg. Similarly, Francis Coquelin was not involved as Freiburg drew 2-2 with Wolfsburg.

  1. Please tell me that Ju-Young Park’s contract is up at the end of the season. What a bizarre situation to have played virtually no football for the past three years.

      1. That doesnt mean much until the player is actually a senior professional. In theory Gibbs was “naturally” a midfielder, but look – he is now a left back with an outside chance of getting on the england squad at that position.

Hayden can end up as a DM – a lot depends on not just his own ability but what the first team requirements are, as the club may like him as a player, like his mentality – but chose to develop him at DM to meet a specific need and position available.

In this case some of Hayden’s chances at central defender position depend on what the club decides about Miquel’s future, what they want to do with Ajayi – or not, plus what the identity and type of senior center back they will almost certainly bring in to replace the likely departing Vermalen.

Yeah, Hayden could end up as a DM at Arsenal. Quite possible.

  2. I agree with ks-gunner vickers at least for now should be ahead of the rest. I’m not saying this on account of his shot stopping but he doesn’t seem sucseptible to clangers, when claiming crosses, corners etc as the rest. IMO is you’re a goalie at youth level it’s these issues which would set you apart from your colleagues as simply by virtue of the fact that you’re at a club like arsenal more or less implies you’ve got impressive reflexes i.e. Your judgement, which in itself is a skill.

Macey seems to have had a good start but so did Martinez and illiev so needs more time to confirm his abilities. Ideally would like a very short term option for the next year or so while sending vickers, illiev and macey on loan to see how they cope before bringing one of them in to potentially challenge chesny though given priorities not sure if that’s feasible (fabianski seems destined to leave).

  3. I think the vickers canvey loan has been a huge success. 40 first team appearances at 18 for a goalkeeper is unheard of, he was 17when he went so the trust arsenal must have in him to represent the club and also perform is a credit to the young man. Genuinely hope next season he goes on loan again maybe league 1or2.
