New signing Centeno debuts as Arsenal U18s beat Newcastle

U18 Premier League- Game 28

Arsenal 1 (Mavididi 32) Newcastle United 0

Arsenal U18s salvaged some pride from what has been a difficult week for the youth system as they beat Newcastle United 1-0 at London Colney today courtesy of a strike from Stephy Mavididi.

Mavididi scored his fifth goal in ten starts at this level this season to earn Arsenal victory, whilst the game was also notable for the debuts of two promising youngsters. Jonatas Centeno, recently recruited from Fulham, impressed at right-back, whilst schoolboy Joshua Da Silva came on as a second-half substitute.

There were two other changes from the side that lost to Tottenham Hotspur, with Marc Bola and Aaron Eyoma also starting. None of the players on show today are expected to start Thursday’s FA Youth Cup tie against Chelsea at Stamford Bridge. Alfred Mugabo, who spent time on trial at Sheffield Wednesday last week, was amongst the substitutes.

subs: Vickers, Mugabo, Maitland-Niles, Da Silva.

Arsenal have three remaining league fixtures at this level this season, with games to come against Wolverhampton Wanderers, West Ham United and Fulham.

  1. great result!!! I thought Centeno was a RW/LW. Jeorge, if Sagna signs a new deal, is it safe to say that a summer exit (whether loan/sale) of Jenkinson is in sight?

    1. Why would you want to sell jenkinson? I guess I understand loan but sale makes no sense to me. Yeah the hype machine has died down and he’s had one or two clangers recently, just like kos when he started off or need I remind anyone ramsey in previous seasons (granted he had differing circumstances), but he’s got really good defensive skills and physical attributes.

May not be the best technically but ppl are seriously overstating that aspect. Could’ve sworn last year most arsenal fans were saying he would be a future England regular.

In any case though i hope he does don’t see sagna signing a contract at this point in time so we will need someone who could play there (preferably versatile). Apologies for the run on on first team matters btw.

  2. I don´t think Jenks is that bad technically, at his age he has not got that thing…poise, and thought in purpose for a majority of the decisions he makes on the pitch. mainly cutting inside, as natural as he looks doing it, he appears to be bat-blind (baseball term)especially to diagonal runners. In comparison, some players like a Luke Shaw just seem to have it. So one has to be careful about even loaning out the likes of Jenkinson. Get a good determination as to if he is able to take things from training and retain them in match performances. Otherwise a loan could just be a sponge for bad habits.
