Loan report- Aneke scores twice; Campbell scores penalty

Chuks Aneke was again amongst the goals, with the midfielder continuing his mightily impressive form this season by scoring twice in Crewe Alexandra’s 3-1 victory over Gillingham. Aneke opened the scoring from close range early on before heading in from Matt Tootle’s cross in the second-half for his 16th goal of the campaign. The 20 year old could hardly have done any more in his attempt to earn a new contract at Arsenal, but it remains difficult to see exactly where he would fit into the first-team picture at Emirates Stadium.

Joel Campbell scored from the penalty spot as Olympiacos beat Ergotelis 4-1. The winger played the whole game.

Johan Djourou played the whole game but couldn’t prevent Hamburg from suffering a 1-0 defeat to Stuttgart in the Bundesliga. Francis Coquelin, meanwhile, was an un-used substitute as Freiburg beat Werder Bremen 3-1.

Benik Afobe played the final 23 minutes as a substitute as Sheffield Wednesday were beaten 1-0 by Doncaster Rovers. The striker set up Jermaine Johnson with a good pass, but the latter couldn’t find the net. Damian Martinez found himself back on the bench after Chris Kirkland returned to the starting line-up.

Daniel Boateng started and played the whole game a Hibernian lost 2-0 to St Johnstone.

Chuba Akpom came on as a 59th minute substitute as Coventry City lost 3-1 to his former loan club Brentford.

Wellington played the last 32 minutes of Real Murcia’s 3-1 defeat to Las Palmas.

Goalkeeper Josh Vickers was named as Canvey Island’s man of the match despite conceding two goals in their defeat to Harrow Borough. Vickers made several impressive saves, whilst James Shea, another Arsenal academy product, was in goal for the opposition.

Ju-Young Park was not involved as Watford lost 2-1 to Wigan Athletic. Zach Fagan missed Boreham Wood’s win over Ebbsfleet United owing to injury. Ignasi Miquel was also unable to feature for Leicester City against Blackburn Rovers as he is currently sidelined with a long-standing problem.

Joel Campbell‘s Olympiacos, who have already secured the Greek league title, take on Ergotelis this evening. Updates to follow.

  1. Apart from Joel Campbell none of these Arsenal loan players are up to premier league level. Wenger really needs to stpp flirting with useless low level players or fuck off back to France and take Giroud with him. Arteta was meant to be a stop gap replacement for Fabregas but Wenger has him playing DM? Wenger has failed to replace a specialist defensive midfielder since Gilberto left. Wenger has played Song who was never a natural DM, he’s played Denilson again not a natural. He refused to give Flamini a improved contract, which led to Flamini going to AC Milan. Song left and Wenger has Arteta playing DM? Wenger is a big fool who makes the same mistakes again and again, he’s an embarrassment.

  2. There are so many players at this level to clear out plus the old duds on high salaries. Luckily Bendtner goes this summer lets hope the following go

    Eisfeld
    Apkom
    Afobe
    Wellington
    Ryo
    Miguel
    Boateng
    Park
    Aneke

Who has real quality in the youth

Crawley Jebb Toral Bellerin Gnarby Zelam

Serious shortage of defenders and a lack of real striker

    1. Seriously, you’re ready to write off Akpom! Who are the English strikers much ahead of him in his age group (18)? I don’t know of any. There must only be a handful of kids that age who’ve been given any chancein prem up front since Rooney started. Wellbeck and Sturridge had a few games, Vaughan at Everton…no one else springs to mind.

The kid Roberts at Fulham is potentially a sensation, but it’s fair to say Akpom of last year may well have made the bench at a bottom of the league prem club. More importantly, ok, he might not have been one of those once or twice a decade kids who are great at 16/17, as it seemed he might just be at one point, but he looks on track for me to have a very good career in the game, hopefully here.

The others you name…I can’t argue with so much (though I do retain a ,probably forlorn, hope we can somehow give Aneke a chance. Giving up on a hugely strong player with two good feet and lots of creativity is something I find hard to accept.) We’ve been amazingly poor at bringing through candidates for cb.

    2. you’re joking surely ! Akpom is very young and is good , Jebb has spend all his time in u18 till now and he is quit old for that level that should mean something and don’t writte Hayden off and Plegy !

  3. Panther? really?

Flamini ran his contract down and left for a massive signing on fee and huge salary, just as he did to Marseille. Nothing Wenger could have done. But you were probably 5 at the time. Wenger gave up 10 years of his career to take us to the next level financially with the stadium to allow us to compete. Through this period where we had to find 500 Million we had to take risks on players instead of buying world class as we had no money. The money is just starting to trickle through, Ozil is the first of many, judge it by next season.

  4. people are being a bit harsh on aneke, saying he has no chance to play for us. he can only excel at the level of the club he is loaned to, and he’s doing exactly that. he’s bossing that whole division. i hope our coaches give him some recognition for what he has done this year.

  5. I have recently watched the Uefa Youth League between Barcelona and arsenal, and I have to say we outplayed them for most part of the game. I have to admit there were quit a few players that looked impressive. Players like plegy, ortmond-outwill, akpom, Olsson, bellerin played an outstanding game. The control, movement and pressing was like watching Spanish league, even the Barcelona fans were applauding our players. The more proven players like gnabry and zelalem could have done better but again the future for these players look good and I haven’t even mentioned the 16 year old Crowley.

  6. I personally think that wenger will sign a new contract but not as the manager. I believe that everyman has his day and wenger had his in a successful 7 year period. Sure he was close to winning some trophies over the last few years but Barcelona chelsea and Birmingham all edged us out. Let’s not forget most people his age are retired, living in care homes or working at b & q. The club should have given wenger the role that was given to sir chips, or made him head of the academy not the fella from wolfsburg. What we need now is some fresh coaching ideas from a younger man just like we did when we brought wenger in 17 years and 1000 games ago, that worked well so why not again? For me wenger becoming director of football would be a great thing with a new manager, new coaches for all levels and most definitely better scouts and medical team. No one can argue with that, Steve bould is a major problem as is banfield peyton Burton court Roberts gatting laraman primovic. None of them are very inspiring are they?
Bould was a decent enough coach at under 18 level but he is responsible for our defending well 17 goals conceded away to the 3 teams above us says it all. Wenger has earned the right to be at the club like Ferguson did but unlike the Ferguson/moyes scenario our new manager won’t be overawed by his predecessors recent success. So I say keep wenger as director of football, offer bould the under 21 role and replace the other 8 with some real legends and/or top young coaches. Vieira bergkamp henry Adams overmars keown lehmann and how about a top manager from Germany or Spain, the leagues that are really showing how it’s done.
As for the players well giroud podolski cazorla ozil arteta and even koscielny mertesacker and rosicky need to take a long hard look at the 3 defeats mentioned and ask them selves could I have done better? The medical team should also be looking at the treatment room and asking themselves why half of our starting x1 players are sitting in there and have been most of the season or in some cases all of the season. If we are to compete against the best we need the best on the pitch and the best in the changing rooms. Walcott wilshire Ramsey ozil are 4 of our starting x1 5 man midfield. Our best player again on Saturday was sagna and he is leaving because he wants to win things and earn more money that to me says it all………again rant over

  7. Crewe fan here. You got any more players you want to loan to our mob at Gresty rd. Aneke’s goals have kept us out of the drop zone (for now) and we hope you sell him to us? I can see him playing for a proper football team (Swansea,Wigan etc…) as he’s on another level to players in our team.
