Loan report- Aneke scores twice, Wellington assists on rare start

Chuks Aneke continued his impressive form by scoring both of Crewe Alexandra’s goals in their 4-2 defeat to Peterborough United. Aneke opened the scoring with an excellent strike and later found the net again from close range, taking his tally for the season to eleven league goals.

Wellington received a rare start as Real Murcia beat Real Jaen 2-0. The Brazilian had a shot saved in the 34th minute and then set up Alex Martinez for the game’s opening goal just after the break. He was substituted with six minutes remaining, with Murcia adding a second goal late on.

Damian Martinez was restored to the Sheffield Wednesday starting line-up for their 2-0 defeat to Yeovil Town. The Argentinian made a good save to deny Ishmael Miller, but he was later beaten twice by the same player. Benik Afobe was introduced for the final 21 minutes, but the striker failed to make an impact.

Chuba Akpom played the entirety of Coventry City’s 2-1 defeat to Colchester United. The England U19 international had a shot saved by goalkeeper Sam Walker.

Joel Campbell was introduced as a substitute with 18 minutes remaining as Olympiacos suffered their second league defeat in succession, losing 2-1 to PAOK.

Francis Coquelin came on for the last 14 minutes of Freiburg’s 1-0 defeat to Borussia Dortmund, whilst Johan Djourou played the whole game as Hamburg drew 1-1 with Eintracht Frankfurt.

Daniel Boateng was an un-used substitute as Hibernian drew 3-3 with Motherwell.

Ju-Young Park‘s Watford were not in action this weekend, with Ignasi Miquel‘s Leicester City also left without a fixture to fulfil. Josh Vickers, probably with Arsenal’s FA Youth Cup commitments in mind, was not involved in Canvey Island’s 2-0 victory over Hampton & Richmond Borough.

  1. Interesting to see where Chuks ends up next season. On one hand he is too good for League 1, but on the other Crewe play to suit him. Would love to see him get a chance in the Championship, but Crewe seem such a perfect fit.

As for the rest, the sooner Chubs opens his account the better. Needs to score, once the first comes more will follow.
Pretty average week for the rest by the sounds of it.

  2. He’s scored 14 goals for Crewe. Can see him getting 20 goals this season. Deserves a solid pre-season and chance to make the first team squad over the summer at the Arse. Unless Arsene wants him to hit Ronaldo numbers.

  3. I do agree that Aneke (and Campbell too) have done enough to deserve at the very least a chance to impress in pre-season. Aneke could be over own Yaya Toure if he matures as expected.

Coquelin impressed mightily in France but did not make the grade here so there is still a long way for them to go but I do believe they will get a pre-season chance at the least.

    Jeorge,
Would you think we would see these two during pre-season ?

  4. Aneke at least deserves a new contract. This is the last year of his contract (I think) and it would be a shame if he were to leave on a free. His contribution in League 1 won’t have gone unnoticed and a fair amount of teams will be looking at him.
