Flamini absence paves way for Gnabry to return to squad for Dortmund clash

Mathieu Flamini will miss tomorrow’s Champions League group stage encounter with Borussia Dortmund with concussion, paving the way for Serge Gnabry to return to the matchday squad. The German U19 international was promoted to the first-team squad early last month and has made three appearances for the senior side so far this campaign, notably scoring the winner in the 2-1 victory over Swansea City in the Premier League. However, following the return of Santi Cazorla from injury, Gnabry was left out of the squad for Saturday’s win over Norwich City at Emirates Stadium.

Flamini’s absence is likely to see Gnabry elevated back into the squad, with the 18 year old set to be preferred over the other options of Ryo Miyaichi, Ju-Young Park and Emmanuel Frimpong. Frimpong, giventhat he is a defensive-midfielder, would appear the most natural replacement in the squad for Flamini, but he hasn’t been involved in a matchday squad for over a month.

Arsenal are still without Theo Walcott, Lukas Podolski, Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain, Abou Diaby, Yaya Sanogo and Gedion Zelalem due to injury.

Youngsters Nico Yennaris and Isaac Hayden joined the first-team for training today, and the latter is poised to captain Arsenal in the UEFA Youth League against Dortmund’s highly-regarded youth setup at Borehamwood on Wednesday. Gnabry will most likely not be included given his first-team commitments, but Chuba Akpom and Hector Bellerin should feature, whilst the versatile Alfred Mugabo could also return having featured for the U18s at the weekend.

Like the first-team, Arsenal U19s have enjoyed victories in their first two group stage fixtures against Marseille and Napoli, but know that the impending double-header against Dortmund could go a long way towards deciding whether they qualify for the latter stages.

Likely Arsenal first-team squad for Dortmund fixture: Szczesny, Sagna, Mertesacker, Koscielny, Gibbs, Arteta, Ramsey, Wilshere, Ozil, Cazorla, Giroud, Fabianski, Jenkinson, Vermaelen, Monreal, Rosicky, Bendtner, Gnabry.

Possible Arsenal U19 squad for Dortmund fixture on Wednesday: Iliev, Bellerin, O’Connor, Hayden, Ormonde-Ottewill, Kamara, Jebb, Maitland-Niles, Lipman, Iwobi, Akpom, Huddart, Raage, Dawkins, Smith, Wright, Olsson, Siemann.

  1. For me it would make more sense for Gnabry to play at borehamwood with either ryo, frimpong or yennaris taking a place on the bench for the 1st team

  2. I agree with Atid. Gnabry is needed at more for the u19’s. Ryo & Frimpong need the cameo appearances to boost their confidence. Its kinda been a long time I’ve seen them play. Also they’re useless to the u19’s

  3. I have a question for people who follow the Arsenal youth teams. Over the last five or six years it seems the players coming through Hale End and the Arsenal academy system are more physical, fast, direct players rather than technical type players.

Is that a fair thing to say? I’m not trying to be negative.

    1. i sense there’s a racial element involved in that comment due to the large number of black players that are coming through Hale End. the answer is simply no. the old stereotype that black players are more athletic and less technical is all but dead and Arsenal’s academy is proving that point. Arsene Wenger called Benik Afobe and Chuks Aneke technically perfect when they were still schoolboys. in order to play for Arsenal at any level, you have to be technical, period.

      1. Oh for gods sake why does everything have to be of a racial element with some people………I’m off for crap, its probably going to be brown is that ok with you?

    2. Not true at all. #1 you need is technical ability and vision. If it is about race then I also wonder how Arsenal seems to have more black kids than whites because teams like fulham, aston villa, united and such have more diversity in their teams. Our white kids seems to come from other clubs at U18 and above. Just something I noticed. Not that I care too much just wonder why.

  4. Jeorge, before you used to report on our under-16 side but not anymore. So, I am wondering if you can provide more information on this kid Joshua Da Silva who seems to be scoring a lot of goals for our under-16

  5. Jeorge how do you rate Elliot wright? Just looking at highlights I can see why you mention crown field diagonals! Seems to enjoy those.
Seem to have quite a few midfielders coming through the u16s. Willock, blanchfield, gilmour, da silva and Donovan all seem highly rated though not sure of da silvas position. Also some ppl seem to envy Chelsea’s plethora of English representatives in comparison to ours. I would actually be worried if I were a Chaldea fan as no one seems to have made a breakthrough yet. Would much rather have one or two representatives in each age group with a decent chance of making it rather than so many with negligible chances though I do agree we could improve on local scouting.

  6. also Vickers and pleguzuelo given 73 and 75 shirts and added to youth champions league squad. I understand that mugabo is now 52 and Crowley 74
