Loan report- Joel Campbell scores twice and sets up another

There was finally some positive news to report regarding Arsenal’s loanees this weekend as Joel Campbell scored two goals and set up another as Olympiacos beat Veria 6-0. Campbell scored twice in the second-half for the league leaders and set up Giannis Maniatis to increase the scoreline further still.

Johan Djourou started and played the whole game as Hamburg dispatched of Nurnberg with an emphatic 5-0 victory despite being just one goal to the good at half-time. Academy product Martin Angha was an un-used substitute for Nurnberg.

Also in the Bundesliga, Francis Coquelin was again handed a starting berth on the left-wing as Freiburg drew 1-1 with Frankfurt.

Wellington came on as a half-time substitute but couldn’t prevent Murcia from losing 3-2 to Real Jaen.

Chuks Aneke came on for the final 14 minutes of Crewe Alexandra’s 4-0 defeat to Notts County and had a shot saved in the closing stages, but Ignasi Miquel was again an un-used substitute for Leicester City, who lost 1-0 to Doncaster Rovers.

Josh Vickers made several good saves but was eventually beaten as Canvey Island drew 1-1 with Carshalton Athletic.

  1. This guy has gone to France, Spain and Greece. I have to say for a young person to have gone through this deserves huge credit.I have followed him for a while know ever since he scored that goal against brazil in copa-America, the day he makes his debut for arsenal will be emotional because he has worked so hard to wear that Red and white shirt.

    1. Doubt it would ever happen if he is played as a winger…. We’ve got better technical, pacier wingers ahead of him on the team sheet. Its hard to see it. However dont get carried away by this performance as Veria is basically like an English league two side and a bottom of the table one at that but they happen to play in Greece’s version of the premier league. I think he would be a good CF… Has all the attributes, size, pace and strength and good enough technical skills (passing, link up and dribbling).

  2. Arsenal should recall Miguel from leicester because he’s not getting a game. Miguel might as well train with Arsenal instead of Leicester.

    1. Why? If he’s not getting a game there he won’t here with Koscienly/Mertesacker/Vermalen in front of him plus Sagna who has been a revelation at CB. At least he’s making the bench at Leicester and has a chance to play. Also we have young players here who would be better suited to be called upon if the situation arised like Ajayi and Hayden can play CB. Miquel has a year left on his contract and I doubt it will get renewed so why have him training here for the sake of it especially if Leicester are covering some of his wages you know. We don’t need him and he’s at a team where he has a better chance of first team football so best for both parties.

    2. If we call him back I don’t agree to let him play and let Our younger players to be pushed back. They are making a good progress and then take that away because another player who has been here for a few years can’t take a spot in another team is wrong I think. When are they going to realize england is a bad place to loan our player out. Get them to Belgium, holland, france and so on instead. Holland is perfect.

    3. I agree he may be better off playing the next round of the Capital One Cup.
Plus if Vermeulen gets injured (if he playh for Belgium he may well be) we have nobody who can play on the left side of CB.
Arsene Wenger tends to prefer a CB partnership of one left footed with one right footed.
The problem with Miquel is that he is not versatile/quick enough to play left back, nor is he vocal/bossy/organisation type of player. That is why BFG is good for us. He guides those around him.

Jorge, do you think that Miquel has still a future with us or will he be let go? Ajayi taking his place as the understudy of the reserve CB.
I am asking because there was a rumour that Barcelona wanted him to run down his contract and get him free in the Summer or on the cheap in January. If they were interested he cannot be that bad. Mind you everything has changed at Barca now.

The one that really got away is Raphael Varane. Arsene Wenger wanted him. He then decided to wait an extra year to see him develop at Lens in Ligue 2. Once Zidane heard about that, he went to see him and recommended him to Mourinho. According to French newspaper the special one signed Varane on the spot for 1) use Zidane as an ally in his war against the Director of Football, 2) piss off Wenger. Once in training he realised how hood Varane was and put him in the team ahead of Pepe.

  3. To me Miquel never really looked like a player who would have a good future at AFC. While he is quite clever he is quite slow and more importantly he is lacking that warrior/never say die attitude that is required. A combination of him and Bartley would probably be a hit.
