Zelalem or Hayden could replace Oxlade-Chamberlain in Fenerbahce squad

Gedion Zelalem, Isaac Hayden, Hector Bellerin, Serge Gnabry and trialist Ramy Bensebaini all remained with the first-team group for today’s training session prior to tomorrow’s Champions League qualifier, first-leg away to Fenerbahce.

22 players trained, with the only change from Friday’s session being the return of Nacho Monreal, who replaced Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain, with the England youngster set for a lengthy spell on the sidelines following an injury sustained against Aston Villa on Saturday.

Monreal is not thought to be fit enough to travel with the squad to Turkey, but Jack Wilshere, Aaron Ramsey, Tomas Rosicky, Bacary Sagna and Kieran Gibbs, who were all doubtful, should be involved.

Thomas Vermaelen, Abou Diaby, Mikel Arteta and Ryo remain sidelined, whilst Nicklas Bendtner and Ju-Young Park were again absent.

For tomorrow’s game, manager Arsene Wenger is likely to be forced into just one change to his matchday squad from Saturday, with either Zelalem or Hayden replacing Oxlade-Chamberlain. Hayden may be the most likely option given the lack of central-defensive cover on the bench, but Bellerin is not thought to be required given the availability of Sagna and Carl Jenkinson, and, in any case, the Spanish youngster is not registered to play for the club in the Champions League at this stage of the competition.

Training group: Szczesny, Fabianski, Giroud, Ramsey, Koscielny, Walcott, Podolski, Gibbs, Zelalem, Hayden, Bellerin, Mertesacker, Bensebaini, Gnabry, Sanogo, Jenkinson, Frimpong, Rosicky, Monreal, Wilshere, Cazorla, Sagna.

  1. I have a feeling that this Algerian trialist will actualy end up signing a contract with arsenal. I think the coaches have seen something in him that we have not seen in the pre-season fixtures that he played.

  2. That’s the case when the squad has been made threadbare by AW as a result of the offloaded deadwoods without replacement & injuries.

  3. Jeorge any idea why arsenal have reduced the length of highlights? It’s a bit annoying! On a side note how was siemann? Had a terrible start but must be something if he’s made the step up to u21s. Defense actually seems decent taking into account we had 3 16/17yr olds. Ironically it seemed boateng, despite starting off well was the poorest. Just judging from the commentary though and brief highlights.

    1. not sure why they’ve done that. they record the whole game, so seems a bit strange. Siemann has done okay in pre-season, but doesn’t strike me as an outstanding talent.

      1. for analysis of the youths too. I saw a coach recording with his ipad a whole game once in a big tournament.

    2. limit the scouting of our youths. its pretty obvious. It used to be 20 min, 10 in each half. then it became shorter and shorter. Soon it will be like city highlights of their youths where they are only showing the goals and I mean the goals absolute nothing more and sometimes not even all the goals from each team.

  4. Arsenal 18 man team vs Fernerbahce:
    GK: Szczesny & Fabianski
Defenders: Sagna, Jenkinson, Monreal, Gibbs, Metersacker & Koscielyn
Midfielders: Wilshere, Ramsey, Rosicky, Cazorla & Frimpong
Strikers: Walcott, Podolski, Giroud, Sanogo & Gnabry. #COYG
