Mugabo becomes Arsenal’s 29th international with run-out for Rwanda senior team

Versatile youngster Alfred Mugabo is yet to secure a professional contract at the club as he enters the second year of his scholarship, but the 17 year old is already a senior international footballer after making his debut for Rwanda in their 2014 World Cup qualifier with Algeria yesterday.

Algeria may have prevailed with a 1-0 victory, but it was still a momentous occasion for Mugabo, who entered the fray as a 54th minute substitute. The Hale End product has been deployed in numerous positions at club level, having played at right-back, centre-back and in central-midfield, whilst his previous representation for his country came as a winger in the 2011 U17 World Cup.

Mugabo made 18 appearances for Arsenal’s U18s last season, and also made a handful of outings for the U21s and in the NextGen Series. He will aim to earn a professional contract during the next campaign.

Mugabo’s cap sees him become the 28th current international on Arsenal’s books, with Mikel Arteta, Vito Mannone and Francis Coquelin (all of whom have been capped by their countries at youth level) the only members of the first-team squad yet to receive a senior call-up.

    1. I’m sorry but I don’t. For me arsenal comes first internationals come second. The fact that fifa cannot organise themselves correctly so that the football calendar is aligned globally frustrates the hell out of us fans.

For me it is so simple internationals should only be played out of season. Then the countries could offer central.contracts similar to cricket a bit like usa and mls.

      1. @atid – The reason the Afcon is played in January is because it is out of season for the club leagues in Africa. I’m not sure why they are allowed to run the competition twice in four years while every other competition is run once every four years. But its place in the calendar makes complete sense.

    2. @Nnamdi Weezy I concur with you. Victor Moses would be the perfect example for these lads.

@Atid these guys can rep both #SuperEagles and #Arsenal well

      1. They can’t represent arsena .during the acon. That is my only point. The gripe is not with africans or any other continent. The gripe sits with fifa who bury their head in the sand and don’t address the problem much like they don’t take racism cheating and the hassling of refs seriously enough.

    3. they first needs to make the youth side before making to the full international team. Mugabo will gain tremendous experience doing this. I hope the older players help him to improve and realize how much work you need to put in.
