Arsenal midfielder Oguzhan Ozyakup played a key role as he captained his Netherlands side to a 2-1 victory over suprise Group A winners Switzerland in the UEFA European U-17 Championships semi-final this morning.
Having already secured a place at the forthcoming FIFA U-20 World Cup following their top-three finish in Group B, the Netherlands were full of confidence going into this game, although they found chances hard to come by in a tightly-contested opening period.
However, Ozyakup continued to probe the midfield and eventually broke through when he played in Shabir Isoufi to make it 1-0.
Luc Castaignos made it 2-0 on the stroke of half-time, but Switzerland emerged with renewed vigour in the second-period and eventually halved the deficit following a Janick Kamber strike.
Switzerland continued to press for an equaliser, but the Dutch held on and will now face either Italy or Germany in Monday’s Final, with Ozyakup surely relishing the chance to lift the prestigious trophy.
