51. Gilles Sunu

Hard-working attacker Gilles flourished last season following a difficult opening campaign in North London.

Tipped for big things when signed under the reccomendation of scout Gilles Grimandi in 2007, he looked lively on his Reserves debut against Portsmouth after a work permit problem prevented him from featuring in the innaugral Emirates Cup.

But from then on things took a turn for a worse as ‘Gilou’ struggled to settle and his lack of goals was becoming a persistent problem. Injury and international call-ups meant a miserable first season for the Frenchman, but he finally found the net for the Reserves against Derby County in April 2008.

After signing his first professional contract with the club, he went on to bigger and better things last season. Gilles was used on both wings by Steve Bould and impressed with his work rate, desire and technical ability.

Goals in consecutive games against Wolves and Bristol City boosted his confidence, although he didn’t score again for over a month, when he notched a brace against Norwich City.

A quiet period ensued up until Christmas time as his international commitments hindered his domestic progress. Yet he rose to prominence in the FA Youth Cup, replacing the injury-stricken Rhys Murphy at home to Wolves in the Fourth Round and preceding to score a hat-trick.

He also grabbed the vital goal away to holders Manchester City at an eerie Eastlands in the semi-final first leg, before also finding the target in the first leg of the Final at home to Liverpool.

Gilles also became more of a regular in the Reserves, where he will be playing the majority of his football this season.

Gilles ended the season on a high note, playing for France u-18s at Wembley against an ESFA England side in the final live match to be broadcast on Setanta Sports.
