FA Youth Cup Preview- Arsenal to host Bradford or Crewe in 3rd round
Posted by Jeorge Bird on November 13, 2009

Arsenal will begin the defence of their FA Youth Cup crown at home to either Bradford City or Crewe Alexandra when the 3rd round of this season’s competition gets underway next month.
The Gunners won the prestigious trophy for the seventh time in their history last campaign, overcoming Liverpool in the two-legged Final after previously getting the better of Tottenham, Sunderland, Wolves and Aston Villa. Much of the personnel from last season’s success are ineligible this time around, but it will be a perfect opportunity for some of this year’s first-year scholars to make a name for themselves.
The 2009/10 edition of the FA Youth Cup is in full flow, with the Second round proper commencing on Monday. Arsenal’s two possible opponents meet on Tuesday evening to determine who will take on the Gunners at Underhill for a place in the 4th round. Bradford ply their trade in the Puma Youth Alliance, the second tier of youth football beneath the Premier Academy League, whilst Crewe are part of England’s premier youth league but currently sit rock bottom of Group C, although they are in a very tough section with Liverpool and both Manchester clubs.
Arsenal, however, will be looking to avoid a repeat of the 2005/06 season when they went out at this stage of the competition on penalties to Brentford and will instead look to replicate the success of last campaign. Below is a run-down of which players are eligible for the Gunners and who is likely to be lining up in the competition this season.
Goalkeepers
With James Shea inelligible and Sean McDermott recovering from injury, the recent capture of James Dunn from Southend was neccessary. Until McDermott recovers, Dunn will have little competition for the n0.1 jersey with Luke Chambers and Yilmaz Aksoy considered relatively unexperienced.
Defenders
First-year scholars Rhema Obed and Sam Byles will both be hoping to start, but with plenty of centre-back options in Daniel Boateng, Ignasi Miquel and Sead Hajrovic, at least one of them is likely to be dissapointed. Cedric Evina may have established himself in the reserves but will still feature in this competition with George Brislen-Hall as his back-up.
Midfielders
Jack Wilshere is still eligible to play this season but it remains unclear whether he will do so as injuries mount in the first-team. Conor Henderson and Emmanuel Frimpong were both involved in last season’s triumph and are likely to feature again. There is a lot of competition in this area, with both Oguzhan Ozyakup and Chuks Aneke challenging for starting berths, whilst Jernade Meade could prove to be a useful option as a substitute. Nico Yennaris has also began the season well and will be fancying his chances of being included. Jamie Edge is struggling with injury at present but may be called upon later in the campaign.
Strikers
Benik Afobe scored in the FA Youth Cup last season, whilst Luke Freeman has already played in the senior version of this competition. Roarie Deacon should start, but is likely to be used as a winger.
Dunn
Obed-Boateng-Miquel-Evina
Frimpong-Ozyakup
Deacon-Henderson-Freeman
Afobe
subs: McDermott, Aneke, Brislen-Hall, Meade, Byles.

Aneke on the bench, really? What a waste.
Wolz said
I know. He’s better than Henderson imo, but this is his last chance to play in the Youth Cup as hes 18, so maybe that’s why he could start.

Wilshere should play. What injuries are mounting up in the first team? He still won’t make the bench at the moment and players like Vela and Merida are (rightfully) ahead of him.

JB- your chattin bollocks, hes good enuff 4 Barca but on the bench for u18s.
Jeorge Bird said
Don’t address me like that. He may well play but somebody has to miss out from the midfield three and Aneke is a first-year

3 Middlesbrough v Everton
This looks like the tie of the round. Both teams with pretty good youth setups.
Supergunner07 said
In terms of competitiveness, tie of the round is number 27

First year or last year your chattin breeze…so if hes good enuff hes gotto wait and watch olders who arent as good play ? mate thats bollocks and if we want to win you play the strongest side.
Jeorge Bird said
who do you think he should play instead of then?
taibo said
Take your pick but he has to start- thats a no brainer
Passenal said
Taibo, Jeorge doesn’t actually pick the team, he’s just giving his opinion based on what he knows about the players. It’s fine to disagree and champion your favourite, but do you have to be so rude?
Parks said
Taibo,
Why on earth are you giving Jeorge a hard time for expressing his opinion? Age means more at youth level than it does as things move up to senior levels so I tend to agree that a younger player should miss out. Especially as those older players that Jeorge has included have done more than enough to warrant their chance. Learn how discuss in a friendly way please.

Jorge, Being the side is so different from last year, do you think the current new crop stand a good chance on winning? and who do you think will be our main competitors,
Cheers, Great Blog
taibo said
Passenal- Thank god he doesnt pick the team. Its his opinion based on what? Fantasy or fact. If he watches u18s games then its obvius to all except the blind that he starts and age has fuck all to do with it.

Taibo, your a knob, go away you low life crettin!

Why did you delete my comment Jorge, I asked a decent Question, Fucker, back to young guns, theyre much quicker than you!!MUG

I didn’t delete your comment. I just hadn’t moderated it yet because I don’t sit on my computer every minute of my life.

LOL taibo you seem like a right dickhead.
taibo said
no9 you are a dick head now go play with your train set if you cant add to the debate, you moron
GM_CEO said
goodness Taibo.. could you please just give us your starting eleven b/c that would be a nice way to add to the “debate”
Me personally I like Aneke and rate him very highly as a player, but I have to agree with Jeorge on the starting eleven. if we are judging on “fact” I am certain all the midfielder starting ahead of Aneke have at some point or another have feature for the reserves, and that do prove a point since the reserves competition is a little higher compared to this competition.

Many people question why Wenger chooses Bendtner, Eboue and Diaby when he could play Wilshere, Merida & Vela who always impress and are the best young talents in the world. If Bould thinks Aneke should be on the bench then he’s right, he knows more than me and you.
ali said
its not a debate its just you acting like a bellend mate
Supergunner07 said
I think with his final pass that Aneke has been putting thru for the strikers this year, they might have to squeeze Aneke into the team however JB also has a point bcuz arsenal’s recent strategy has been mainly playing 2nd year scholars in FAYC unless there are injuries or the player in question is a very good/exceptional talent despite being young.
There is still 4 weeks before FAYC starts so injuries might occur thus meaning decisions are made for Bould & Brady.
I do think we should all try to be civil, lol

Tie no. 3 should be interesting. They both have good academy sides!
