Reserve regulars may have to embark on loan spells to compensate for lack of action
Posted by Jeorge Bird on November 10, 2009
The news that Arsenal Reserves’ trip to face West Ham United has been postponed until the New Year means that the Gunners only have two remaining league fixtures in 2009.
This year, with Tottenham’s decision to pull out, there are less fixtures than ever in the Reserve League South and, as such, games are spread sporadically throughout the course of the campaign, meaning it is difficult for those in need of matches to gain regular playing time.
With a tough looking trip to Manchester City in the Carling Cup Quarter-finals likely to mean Arsene Wenger is likely to play less youngsters than he would have liked, there is a serious shortage of game time for those who are too old to play for the under-18s yet are not considered part of the first-team squad.
A plausible option for the majority of them would be a loan spell, which would help them to develop their tactical understanding of the game whilst at the same time, hopefully, providing them with some much needed match action. The likes of Henri Lansbury and Jay Simpson are currently enjoying fruitful loan spells and those who have been part of Arsenal’s Carling Cup squad this season could soon join them.
The likes of Kyle Bartley, Craig Eastmond, Gilles Sunu, Francis Coquelin and Sanchez Watt, along with Mark Randall, are the most obvious candidates for a stint away from London Colney and, once the Gunners’ participation in the second most prestigious domestic cup competition is over for this season, then they are likely to depart.
Sunu has been tentatively linked in some quarters with a loan move to Blackpool, where Jay Emmanuel-Thomas has just completed a successful spell. The others would surely attract an assortment of Championship and League One clubs, with Wenger and his coaching staff charged with the task of finding a side which will give the youngsters regular playing time.
There are a batch of under-18 players ready to step up to the Reserves on a regular basis, with the likes of Ignasi Miquel, Cedric Evina, Conor Henderson and Emmanuel Frimpong capable of cementing regular places in the starting XI. If, for example, Sunu and Watt were to both go out on loan in the second half of the season, then it would open a door for Rhys Murphy, who has been a substitute for the last three Reserve matches.
With so many young professionals requiring game time, it is time for the cycle to get in motion again with the players who have been in the Reserves for a couple of years going out on loan and some of the under-18s stepping up to replace them.

Good post I think Sunu Randall and Bartley should go out on loan. Sunu with his power would do well in the Championship, Randall and Barazite need fotball if nothing else to put themselves in the shop window.
Bartley could start out in League one and build himself up as he is young yet and like MAtt Connolly a good loan spell in league one would also build his reputation.
I do think we should keep Watt,Coquelin and Eastmond as if any these guys are likely to play in the carling and Fa cups as well as maybe Champions League cause we ve quailifed early.

I think Arsene should rather let Senderos leave so as to open a chance for Bartley. Senderos has had enough chances for the past six years but couldn’t cement a CB slot.
Its time for Arsene to forget about him and look to the future and offer opportunities for the young Bartley instead of sticking the likes of Sylvestre and Senderos.

Senderos’ contract expires next summer along with Silvestre so I think one or both of them will leave then.

What about Kerrea Gilbert, when does his expire?

Yes, Silvestre must leave after this season and maybe Senderos as well. Djourou will return and it wouldn’t surprise me to see Nordveit come back as the fourth option. If Djourou hadn’t been injured then our CB situation would look so much better, but what the hell.
Sunu has been fantastic this season. I only watch highlights on ATVO since I live in Iceland, but what a player. He needs some competitive football NOW, Watt also. They should go to the Championship, League 1 is too far down for them. They are both great talents with good attitude and very high work-rate. Few months of football for them could see them return as ready to make a challenge for the first team. At least we would have a clue if they are up for it or not. They are the same age now as Bendtner was when he lit the Championship on fire with Birmingham.
I think most of the second and third year pros need to go on loan. Traore (EPL), Barazite (EPL-CH), Gilbert (CH), Randall (CH), Eastmond (CH), Coquelin (CH), Deacon (L-1), Ayling (L-1), Bartley (L-1) and Evina (L-2) are all candidates. Also Vela (top 10 EPL team) if Wenger isn’t going to give him any chances. I’m getting very bugged about his lack of opportunities. I know he’s been injured but last season he barely played and Wenger treats him with disrespect, barely mentioning him in interviews.

When JETs loan ends? In my opinion he should get the chance to fill Bendtners slot ? JET was by far the best youth player last season and with the supporting cast Arsenal first team has I wouldn’t be surprise if he made a huge impact!!!
Come on Arsene inject the JET to the first team!!!

Matt, I really did laugh my ass off. And I’m not only saying this as Bendtner is one of my favorite players. First of all, JET is not that good. I wished I could fast forward 2-3 years on just to proof to people that this kid is not that special. He is nowhere near Lansbury or Wilshere and I (along with Wenger, it seems) much prefer Watt and Sunu instead of him. There’s a reason why he only became a reserves regular last season. There’s a reason he wasn’t in the CC squad last season. There’s a reason why Murphy and Lansbury were the stars of the U-19 while JET made the bench at best.
He is a talented player but he is not as good as Wilshere and Lansbury and to say he could challenge Bendtner is a joke. Not now, not ever. Nick is a great striker who tracks back (necessary when you have Arshavin on the other flank).

I was thinking he has height among the others? Stone opinions vary but thanks! I like Sunu also! Peace!!!

Hehe sorry, maybe my tone was a bit harsh. Of course you have your right to your opinion. Bottom line, I don’t rate him.

Yeah he was a regular as a 17-18 year old. That is not bad at all! He was one of our best youth player in U18 all season. Not bad at all. And he was still too unexperiance to feature in CC and yes.. some players like Merida, bentner was ahead of him. But he cam from U18. lansbury never played in CC either. So that was a bad example.
And I am pretty sure our U18 and reserves is better than englands U19 acctually. After all our U18 was best in the country.
Football can change very very fast and just take a look at Eastmond. Just becouse some players is ahead of him right now doesn’t mean he will never go ahead of them. 2-3 years is a very long time and in football everything can change in 3-5 months.

I also forgot. Szczesny should get a chance on loan. Preferably, I would like to see him start for Arsenal (as he is the best of our dubious goalkeeping force) but since that’s not going to happen, I would like to see him get a loan to the Championship. He could even be the No. 1 for Hull

He has been selected by the Poland national team. Quite an achievement.

I’m willing to bet he’ll even get his first cap for them as they only have two friendlies during this international break.

Just seen the sad news about Robert Enke.

it’s really sad to hear. terrible news for the footballing world. RIP and best of wishes to his family.

also Jeorge. How do you rate Sean McDermott so far? I’ve only seen some highlights but he hasn’t looked that impressing to me. What do you think?
Jeorge Bird said
He’s only played two games, so its difficult to judge. He is an agile shot-stopper with good reflexes, but I don’t know if you saw one of the goals he conceded against Leicester when he came so far off his line and was beaten easily, but he has a lot to work on as well.

Decision-making is the biggest achilles for modern day GKs.

yea, think I saw that one. He looks like he needs some discipline himself a bit, he’s maybe a little eccentric. But he has the future ahead of him. It’s just amazing what a long line of international goalkeepers we have, only interrupted by Almunia and Shea. Szczesny and Fabiansky are full internationals, Mannone U-21, McDermott, Martinez, Chambers and Aksoy all called upon on U-17 and U-16 level. Yet our No. 1 has never been capped at any level.
