Match Preview- Barnet v Arsenal- Strong Reserve contingent in squad

Posted by Jeorge Bird on July 17, 2009

It may be just 55 days since the final ball of last season was kicked, but the 2009/10 campaign is already here.

Arsenal take on North London neighbours Barnet in their traditional pre-season friendly at Underhill tomorrow afternoon, as part of the agreement which sees the Arsenal Reserves play their home matches at the stadium with the famous slope.

There are some notable names in Arsene Wenger’s 21-man squad for the fixture, including new signing Tomas Vermaelen and the returning Tomas Rosicky, who hasn’t played at any level since January 2008.

Other familiar faces include William Gallas, Andrey Arshavin, Johan Djourou, Mikael Silvestre, Manuel Almunia and Vito Mannone, whilst there is also a strong contingent of Reserve and youth players in the squad.

The majority of the Double winning u-18 side from last season have been named, including newly-signed professionals Craig Eastmond and Luke Ayling, whilst Conor Henderson is also in the squad.

Gilles Sunu is involved in the first-team squad for the very first time, whilst strikers Jay Simpson and Nacer Barazite are back following their loan spells at West Brom and Derby County respectively.

Probable 1st half team:

Almunia

Djourou-Gallas-Vermaelen-Silvestre

Wilshere-Rosicky-Randall-Arshavin

Barazite-Simpson

Probable 2nd half team:

Mannone

Eastmond-Djourou-Ayling-Cruise

E.-Thomas-Coquelin-Frimpong-Henderson

Sunu-Watt

This is going to be a fantastic opportunity for the Reserves to impress Arsene Wenger and maybe even earn a seat on the plane for the tour of Austria.

There are some notable absentees, including Eduardo, who was expected to play. The players who were on international duty last month are not involved, whilst Henri Lansbury, Rhys Murphy, Fran Mérida and Gavin Hoyte are all at the UEFA European Under-19 Championships.

Good line up. I think Barazite will play right wing, Wilshere centre mid, Rosicky on the left and Arshavin up front with Simpson.

Great to see Conor Henderson in there, though it is a worry that Eduardo isn’t at full fitness yet.

Apart from Adebayor of the 32 professionals left out of the squad do you think there are any others who do not have a future at the club?
I think Senderos and Gilbert are the 2 most likely candidates, but I was very interested to see a 21man squad! we nearly always take 22 so do you think there could be a last minute addition, like there has been in the past? Bartley perhaps or Hangeland even? or may be a trialist that we are keeping under wraps?

i dont think Rosicky will be played in the 1st half as barnet will be more physical and dangerous during that period i instead think he will be on the bench and put on when we have a 2:0 lead at least

I think in an interview given very recently, Dudu said that he was not going to play at Barnet. He said that he was hoping to play some games on Austria tour or may be one of the full games in EMirates cup directly. I don’t remember where I read it, but surely I have some memories of it.

Don’t you think the ticket price is a tad ridicuolous? £18 or something for standing seats, its a shame would have loved to have gone as its just a bus ride away from me, but that is daylight robbery. shame on you Barnet F.C.

  15. Yes, I agree; although Reserve matches are free and Barnet are in need of some extra cash. The prices for the Lincoln friendly are astronomical too, especially as that will only feature reserve players.

Only place I’m aware it is available at the moment, is in the printed copy of the magazine. I don’t think there is an on-line copy of the magazine.
