Athletic right-back Ben Glasgow looking to make big impression in u-18s
Posted by Jeorge Bird on July 16, 2009
He may have only got a brief taste of under-18s football last season, but quicksilver right-back Ben Glasgow is ready to force his way into Steve Bould’s plans this time around.
With Craig Eastmond no longer eligible for the youth team, and Rhema Obed’s defensive capability of some concern, Bould could turn to Glasgow to offer a solution on the right side of his defence.
Despite the fact that he will still be a schoolboy this season, Ben models his game on consistency; exemplified by the fact that he played every single game for Steve Gatting’s under-16s in 2008/09. His ability to get forward, but also be aware of his defensive duties has won him many admirers, including England u-16 coach Kenny Swain, who placed Ben on standby following England trials last year.
Ben has subsequently opted to represent the Republic of Ireland at international level, but club football is his main concern at present as he works his way towards a scholarship.
As well as being quick, Ben is also physically strong and often uses his strength to get the better of his opponents. His eye for a pass is also noteworthy and he has a good understanding of the technical side of the game.
Last season’s highlights included his showing at the Atalanta Cup in Italy and also a resplendent performance against Chelsea in the end-of-season friendly at Emirates.
A good season at under-18 level is needed before he can be judged properly, but the early signs are certainly promising for this young prospect.

Jeorge, who would you expect to step up from the under 16s to the under 18s this season?

Was Glasgow the average one that we chose in preference to that better right back who then went somewhere else?
