Arsenal’s Yennaris and Rees called up for Nordic Tournament

Posted by Jeorge Bird on July 9, 2009

Arsenal pair Nico Yennaris and Josh Rees have been called up to the England U17 squad for the Nordic Tournament, which begins later this month.

Yennaris, who can play at centre-back and in central-midfield, earns his second call-up to the squad, whilst this is Rees’ first opportunity at this level having previously represented the under-16s during last season’s Victory Shield triumph.

Kenny Swain’s squad will travel to Trondheim, in Norway, and will face the hosts as well as Denmark and the Faroe Islands in their three group games. Should they prevail to the Final, they will face one of Sweden, Iceland, Scotland or Finland.

Swain is using this tournament as an opportunity to bed in many of the u-16s into the u-17 squad, and it is likely that Yennaris and Rees will be regulars at this level next season; whilst the likes of Zak Ansah and Luke Chambers may be called-up into the u-16s.
